Universal Parks Reveal Big Summer Shakeup

A Kind of Ride

For decades, theme park fans have flocked to Southern California in search of something extraordinary. From cinematic backlot tours to groundbreaking attractions, Universal Studios Hollywood has long blended Hollywood storytelling with adrenaline-pumping thrills. Guests walking through the park’s gates expect spectacle, innovation, and—most importantly—an experience they can’t find anywhere else.

That expectation has only grown in recent years as the entertainment giant continues to push the boundaries of immersive attractions. New rides, evolving lands, and ambitious projects have become the norm as Universal Destinations & Experiences competes for the attention of thrill-seekers and movie lovers alike.

But every once in a while, something surfaces that instantly grabs the attention of fans across the theme park community—something that hints at the next big chapter for the park. Recently, chatter began spreading online about a major development tied to one of Hollywood’s most recognizable film franchises. While Universal had already teased the attraction itself, new details are now sending waves through the fandom.

Theme Park Guests Expect Speed, Spectacle, and Cinematic Storytelling

When guests visit Universal Studios Hollywood, they’re not just looking for rides—they’re looking for experiences pulled straight from the movies. The park has built its reputation on attractions that transform blockbuster franchises into physical adventures.

From exploring magical corridors inside The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to navigating the legendary Studio Tour, visitors have grown accustomed to attractions that blur the line between film and reality.

That’s why anticipation has been building for Universal’s upcoming roller coaster inspired by the Fast & Furious franchise. Known for its high-speed car chases, over-the-top action sequences, and unforgettable vehicles, the series naturally lends itself to a thrilling theme park experience.

Fans have been eager to see exactly how Universal plans to translate that cinematic energy into a real-world ride.

Rumblings Around a Major Addition to Universal’s Lineup

Universal first announced the new attraction in May 2024, immediately sparking excitement among theme park enthusiasts and film fans alike. At the time, the project promised something the park had never attempted before: its first-ever high-speed outdoor roller coaster.

Located near the park’s famous escalators connecting the upper and lower lots, the ride will stretch across the hillside landscape of Universal Studios Hollywood. Early details suggested the attraction would begin across from the entrance to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, weaving through the terrain on a massive track system.

But despite the announcement, fans had yet to see a key element of the experience: the ride vehicles themselves.

The Fast & Furious Franchise Has Always Been Defined by Its Iconic Cars

The Fast & Furious films have built an entire culture around legendary street racing vehicles. For longtime fans of the franchise, the cars themselves are often just as important as the characters behind the wheel.

From Dominic Toretto’s thunderous muscle cars to Brian O’Conner’s modified imports, these vehicles became symbols of the franchise’s identity.

So when Universal revealed that the upcoming coaster would feature cars inspired by the films, curiosity exploded across the fandom. What would they look like? How authentic would they be? And how would the ride recreate the feeling of high-speed drifting?

Those questions finally received answers this week.

Universal Reveals the Ride Vehicles for Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift

On March 4, Universal Studios Hollywood shared the first official look at the ride vehicles for Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, offering fans a glimpse of what riders will soon experience.

The park unveiled four unique ride vehicles, each modeled after fan-favorite cars from the film franchise.

Among them is the iconic Dodge Charger, the sleek black muscle car associated with Vin Diesel’s character Dominic Toretto. Universal describes it as the “ultimate American muscle car,” capturing the powerful presence fans recognize from the films.

The coaster will also feature a vehicle inspired by Han Seoul-oh’s Mazda RX-7, drawing from Sung Kang’s 1997 model complete with racing seats, upgraded suspension, and custom interior detailing.

Another ride vehicle takes inspiration from Brian O’Conner’s Nissan Skyline GT-R, the distinctive blue car driven by the late Paul Walker’s character in the franchise. Universal notes that the design reflects the performance and styling modifications that made the vehicle famous among fans.

Finally, the lineup includes Brian O’Conner’s orange Toyota Supra, based on the 1994 model powered by the legendary 2JZ-GTE twin-turbo inline-six engine. The park calls it one of the most memorable cars in the entire Fast & Furious series.

The vehicles will do more than simply look impressive. Universal says each car will feature a groundbreaking 360-degree rotation, simulating the feeling of real drifting while riders race along the track.

When it opens this summer, the coaster will reach speeds of up to 72 miles per hour across 4,100 feet of track.

What This New Coaster Could Mean for Universal Studios Hollywood

With Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift set to debut this summer, Universal Studios Hollywood appears poised to add another headline attraction to its lineup.

The combination of recognizable vehicles, cinematic storytelling, and high-speed coaster technology could make the ride a major draw for both movie fans and thrill-seekers.

And as Universal continues expanding its portfolio of blockbuster experiences, this latest addition reinforces the company’s commitment to transforming film franchises into unforgettable theme park adventures.

The real question now is simple: once the engines start roaring and the drifting begins, will Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift become Universal Studios Hollywood’s next must-ride attraction?

Theme park fans will soon find out.

What do you think about the newly revealed ride vehicles for the upcoming coaster? Would you ride Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift on your next visit to Universal Studios Hollywood?
