Walt Disney World vacations already require a lot of strategy. Guests have to think about budget, transportation, dining, and how much time they want to spend moving between parks and resorts. Now Disney has added another factor to that list. A major refurbishment at one of its most famous hotels is going to last longer than many guests expected, and that changes the picture for travelers heading to Disney in 2026.
The update did not come with much fanfare. Disney did not turn it into a major moment. Instead, the details surfaced more quietly, and that made the news feel even more surprising once people started realizing how far this project now stretches.
Refurbishment Work Keeps Showing Up Across Disney Hotels
This news also fits into a much larger pattern. Walt Disney World has spent 2026 continuing hotel work in several areas, from guest rooms to pools to shared outdoor spaces. Disney is clearly focused on refreshing the resort experience piece by piece, which means construction has become part of the backdrop at more hotels than usual.
That does not mean every stay feels disrupted. Disney usually phases projects so guests can still enjoy most of the resort while construction is underway. But it does mean travelers need to pay closer attention before they book. A beautiful Disney resort can still come with closed amenities, blocked views, or rerouted walking paths.
That reality matters even more when the hotel involved is Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

Why This Resort Means More Than Most
The Contemporary is one of those hotels that instantly means something to Disney fans. It opened in 1971 at Walt Disney World, so it is woven into the property’s history in a way newer resorts simply are not.
Its look also makes it unforgettable. Few Disney hotel designs are as recognizable as the Contemporary’s A-frame structure, especially with the monorail running right through the building. That image has become part of the Walt Disney World identity.
Guests also love the convenience. The Contemporary sits close to Magic Kingdom, which makes it one of the most practical places to stay if easy park access is a priority. Because of that mix of nostalgia and location, any major change here tends to attract more attention.

The Project Has Been Growing Since 2024
This refurbishment is not new. Work first started in 2024, and at the time, it looked like a lengthy but manageable update. Now Disney has confirmed that the project will continue through 2027, turning it into a much longer process than many guests likely assumed.
That extension becomes especially important in spring 2026, when a new phase begins at the Main Tower. Starting March 23, exterior maintenance will begin there, and Disney says guests may notice construction during the day. Some views could be affected, and certain walking paths may shift while crews work around the building.
So while the resort will remain open, the experience may not feel quite as seamless as guests expect from one of Disney’s flagship hotels.
Getting Around the Resort Will Take More Planning
The Main Tower is not the only area seeing changes. Disney will also limit access to the Skyway Bridge that connects Bay Lake Tower to the Contemporary’s Main Tower. From late March through early May 2026, that bridge will close on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
After 5:00 p.m., the bridge will reopen and remain open on weekends. Even so, daytime guests will need to use alternate routes when moving between those areas. Disney has also warned that construction activity may be both visible and noticeable while that work continues.
For frequent guests who rely on that direct connection, this is the kind of operational change that can affect the rhythm of a stay.

Bay Lake Tower Amenities Stay Partially Offline
The work also continues at Bay Lake Tower itself. Exterior repairs on elevator landings will run through late spring 2026, adding another layer to the ongoing project. At the same time, some of the tower’s most popular recreation spaces remain closed.
The Bay Cove Pool, Cove Bar, water play area, and whirlpool spa have all been unavailable since late January. Disney expects those amenities to reopen in early May 2026. Until then, guests can use the main pool and other water features at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, though that may create more crowding in shared areas.

What This Means for 2026 Trips
Guests staying at the Contemporary in 2026 or beyond should not assume this is a quick fix that will be over soon. Disney has made it clear that the resort will remain under refurbishment for quite a while. That means construction noise, altered paths, and limited access to some areas may continue to shape the guest experience.
At the same time, Disney is investing in a resort that means a great deal to fans. The goal is to maintain the Contemporary’s status as one of Walt Disney World’s most iconic hotels while preparing it for the years ahead. For now, though, guests need to book with open eyes. This project is bigger, longer, and more noticeable than it first appeared.
