‘Stranger Things’ Series Will Continue in Theaters Later This Year

Netflix is taking Stranger Things beyond the small screen once again.

The upcoming animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 will debut in theaters ahead of its streaming launch, with the first two episodes set for a limited theatrical release on April 18, five days before the show arrives globally on Netflix on April 23.

According to Variety, “The screenings, in partnership with AMC Theatres, will take place in 34 theaters across the U.S. at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. local time,” with additional showings at the Paris Theater in New York and Netflix House Philadelphia. The report also notes that “an exclusive collectible will be available to U.S. attendees while supplies last.”

A New Story Set Between Seasons

Set between Stranger Things Season 2 (2017) and Season 3 (2019), the animated series revisits Hawkins during a quieter — though short-lived — stretch of time.

“In the winter of 1985, snow blankets the town and the horrors of the Upside Down are finally fading. Our heroes Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max have settled back into a normal life of D&D, snowball fights, and quiet days,” the official logline reads. “But beneath the ice, something terrifying has awakened… Our heroes must race to solve this mystery and save Hawkins in this new story set in the Stranger Things universe.”

Voice Cast and Characters

While the story centers on familiar faces, the original cast doesn't return. Instead, the series introduces a new voice lineup, including Jeremy Jordan as Steve Harrington, Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max Mayfield, and Luca Diaz as Mike Wheeler.

They are joined by Elisha “EJ” Williams (Lucas Sinclair), Braxton Quinney (Dustin Henderson), Benjamin Plessala (Will Byers), and Brett Gipson (Jim Hopper), alongside Odessa A’zion as new character named Nikki Baxter.

Lou Diamond Phillips and Janeane Garofalo also feature in undisclosed roles.

Franchise Momentum After Season 5

The theatrical move follows a turbulent response to Stranger Things Season 5, which concluded the main series after nearly a decade.

The finale, “Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up,” sparked widespread debate, with some fans claiming it felt incomplete and others launching petitions for an extended cut.

Despite that reaction, Netflix has continued to expand the franchise. A filmed version of the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow is also headed to the platform, while a live-action project loosely tied to Season 5 is officially in development.

From Streaming to Cinemas

This is not the first time Stranger Things has appeared in theaters. The Season 5 premiere was screened at the TCL Chinese Theatre on November 6, 2025, and the finale received a simultaneous theatrical rollout across more than 600 locations in North America on December 31, 2025 through January 1, 2026.

With Tales From ’85, however, Netflix is further testing how its flagship property can function across both streaming and theatrical platforms.

Whether the animated series can match the cultural impact of the original remains to be seen, but the strategy is clear: the story of Hawkins is far from over.
