Major changes are underway at Magic Kingdom, and one of Tomorrowland’s most familiar attractions is getting ready to welcome guests back with a noticeably different experience.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is nearing its return, and recent glimpses inside the attraction reveal that Disney has gone beyond a simple refurbishment. Instead, the ride has been reimagined with upgraded technology and new interactive elements as part of broader resort enhancements planned through 2025 and 2026.
Guests boarding their Star Cruisers will quickly spot one of the biggest updates: the blasters. No longer mounted in place, these redesigned blasters can now be picked up and aimed freely, giving riders greater control and accuracy. Alongside this change, updated lighting, refreshed targets, and enhanced scoring displays create a more dynamic and immersive gameplay experience.
Story updates have also been woven into the attraction. Disney has introduced new show scenes and added a new animatronic character named Buddy. This character plays a role in preparing guests for their mission, offering a training-style introduction before they head off to battle Emperor Zurg. While the core storyline remains familiar, the added structure helps create a stronger sense of progression.
Before the attraction officially reopens, Disney is hosting preview sessions exclusively for cast members. These previews, taking place just ahead of the April 8 debut, allow employees to experience the ride while also helping Disney refine its operations.
Scheduled from March 21 through March 27, the preview period gives teams time to monitor ride performance, guest flow, and timing. It also allows Disney to test newly installed features like the updated blasters and scoring systems in a real-world environment. This behind-the-scenes step is a routine part of preparing any major attraction for opening day.
In addition to the physical updates, a change to the scoring system is drawing attention.
According to a new report, reaching “Galactic Hero” status now requires more effort than before. Previously awarded for hitting the maximum score of 999,999 points, the title now requires guests to exceed 1,000,000 points. The score cap has also been lifted, meaning there is no longer a ceiling for how high riders can go.
This tweak adds a new level of challenge for those aiming to achieve the top ranking.

0-1,000: Star Flyer
1,001-10,000: Solar Navigator
10,001-100,000: Astro Aviator
100,001-300,000: Planetary Pilot
300,001-600,000: Space Ace
600,001-999,999: Cosmic Commando
+1,000,000: Galactic Hero
The preview period also raises the possibility of an early debut. Disney has, in the past, opened attractions ahead of schedule in an unofficial capacity if testing proceeds smoothly.
That means some guests visiting before April 8 could find the ride operating sooner than expected. While this can be an exciting surprise for some, it may change the experience for those who were anticipating a clearly defined opening day.
