Disney World Uproots at Magic Kingdom as Expansion Plans Change

Magic Kingdom’s largest expansion to date is continuing to unfold, and new details suggest Disney’s Villains Land is undergoing significant changes as work progresses.

Tucked away in the northwest portion of the park, the future home of Villains Land is slowly transforming. While Disney hasn’t made major announcements recently, filings and construction activity are offering a clearer picture of what’s happening. From updated permits to visible groundwork—and even the relocation of long-established trees—the project is steadily advancing.

What was once introduced as a conceptual idea is now firmly in development. Recent permit filings reveal that Disney is still fine-tuning the expansion. Since early 2026, the plans have shifted considerably, with updated layouts, modified infrastructure, and expanded building footprints showing that the design is still being actively shaped.

One of the most notable takeaways from the latest documents is the scale of the project. At least two major show buildings are planned, including one that reportedly spans around 70,000 square feet. That level of size typically signals a major attraction experience.

Looking back at earlier filings from January, the newest updates highlight clear differences. This isn’t just a matter of small revisions—core elements like water management systems, facility placement, and structural outlines have all been adjusted. The continued evolution points to an expansion that Imagineers are refining as they move forward, positioning Villains Land as a major addition alongside Piston Peak National Park.

There’s also ongoing discussion among industry watchers that Disney may be expanding the scope of the project behind the scenes. Rumors currently suggest attractions themed to The Emperor's New Groove (2000) and Sleeping Beauty (1959) villain Maleficent could be part of the lineup.

While much of the conversation has centered on blueprints and speculation, recent activity onsite is providing a more concrete look at Disney’s approach.

Construction updates reveal that Disney is opting to relocate, rather than remove, several mature oak trees from the area. These trees, some decades old, are being carefully prepared for transplant, with their root systems secured and supported during the move.

Relocating trees of this size is a complicated process, requiring careful planning and execution. Whether they are reintroduced into Villains Land or placed elsewhere within Walt Disney World, the effort highlights a focus on preserving natural elements.

The original concept for Villains Land called for a shadowy, enchanted setting filled with twisted woods and dramatic architecture. Incorporating mature trees could help establish that atmosphere immediately, giving the land a more established feel from the moment it opens.

At this stage, the area is still largely in preparation mode. While permits continue to be filed, vertical construction has not yet become prominent. Instead, crews are focused on clearing land and laying the groundwork needed for future development.

Villains Land remains a work in progress, but it’s no longer just a concept. Each permit update and construction milestone brings Disney closer to realizing what could be one of Magic Kingdom’s most transformative expansions.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
