The runDisney Expo Opened Today and Walt Disney World Is Already a Different Place

If you drove onto Walt Disney World property today without knowing the runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend had started, you found out pretty quickly. The energy at the resort is different when thousands of runners and their travel parties are in town, and today marked the official beginning of one of the more logistically intense weekends on the spring calendar at Disney World.

The Health and Fitness Expo opened this morning, the merchandise lines formed fast, and the resort is now fully in race weekend mode through Sunday. If you are visiting any time between now and the end of the weekend, what you experience on the property will reflect that, whether you are running a single mile or not.

The runDisney Expo Is the First Stop for Everyone Running

The runDisney Health and Fitness Expo is open Thursday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, April 17, from noon to 7 p.m., and Saturday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Every race participant must come through here before their first event to pick up their race bib, participant shirt, and any merchandise they ordered. No exceptions outside of yoga participants, who can check in on the day of their event at the yoga location.

The merchandise situation is worth knowing about if you are planning to shop. This year's theme is iconic Disney duos, and the collection is built around that concept from top to bottom. The 5K is Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. The 10K is Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, with rubber ducks available alongside the standard gear. The 10-Miler is Joy and Sadness from Inside Out.

The full challenge, covering 19.3 miles, is themed to Genie and Aladdin, and a pair of Genie-inspired Brooks running shoes in the mix has already generated attention. General merchandise rounds out the collection with jackets, vests, a cardigan, jewelry, and more. Most items are limited to two per guest. Gold and Platinum Club runDisney members got early access to the merchandise shop this morning.

Everyone else joins a virtual queue that can be entered from a hotel room or anywhere within 45 miles of the resort.

The runDisney Races and the Crowds They Bring

The weekend covers four events. The 5K, the 10K, the 10-Miler, and the combined challenge that strings all three together for a total of 19.3 miles. Each race has its own finisher medal, and the challenge earns a fourth for completing everything. Registration sold out well before the weekend arrived.

The crowd impact of a sold-out runDisney event extends beyond the runners themselves. The friends, families, and supporters who travel with participants push attendance numbers across the entire resort well above what a typical spring weekend would produce on its own.

Sunday at EPCOT Is the Situation That Needs the Most Attention

Out of everything happening this weekend, Sunday, April 19, is the day that demands the biggest adjustment from guests visiting. The 10-Miler begins at 5 a.m., and the race route through Disney property directly affects EPCOT operations.

The park opens at 10 a.m. on Sunday instead of the usual 9 a.m. Early Entry guests through a Disney resort hotel get in at 9:30 a.m. rather than 8:30 a.m. That is a one-hour shift across the board, which significantly changes the math on crowd management.

When every guest, without Early Entry, arrives at exactly 10 a.m. instead of filtering in over an hour. The lines at Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Frozen Ever After, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, and Test Track build immediately rather than gradually.

Road closures for the race will also significantly slow travel to EPCOT on Sunday morning. A drive that normally takes ten minutes from a resort hotel can stretch to 45 minutes or longer. Disney transportation is expected to run behind as well.

Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom are all operating on normal hours on Sunday with no race-related disruptions. If EPCOT isn't locked into your Sunday plans, those three parks are a straightforward alternative.

If it is, the Flower and Garden Festival gives the day real appeal even under crowded conditions. The food booths and garden displays are genuinely worth a slower-paced visit. That approach will feel a lot better than fighting the crowd at rope drop.

The expo is open. The weekend is here. Sunday is coming.
