Don’t Go to EPCOT on April 19 Unless You Want a Disney Nightmare

EPCOT will open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2026, instead of the usual 9 a.m., eliminating the rope-drop advantage and potentially leading to large crowds. Early Entry for Disney resort guests will start at 9:30 a.m. due to the runDisney Springtime Surprise 10-Miler, which begins at 5:00 a.m. and requires road closures. Currently, crowds are low thanks to the Flower and Garden Festival, but be prepared for a crazy weekend next month that could make April 19 a challenging day to visit EPCOT.

The runDisney Weekend Causing All This

The runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend runs April 16-20 featuring races centered around Disney duos, and here's what's happening:

  • April 16: 5K with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde from Zootopia
  • April 17: 10K with Winnie the Pooh and Tigger
  • April 19: 10-miler with Joy and Sadness from Inside Out (THIS is the one affecting EPCOT)

The 10-miler on April 19 starts at 5 a.m. with thousands of participants running through Disney property, requiring road closures and operational changes affecting the entire resort, with EPCOT's delayed opening being the most visible impact that regular park guests will experience.

What You Actually Need to Know About April 19

If you have Early Entry access through a Disney resort stay, you can enter EPCOT at 9:30 AM, which gives you 30 minutes before general opening at 10 AM. Arrive around 9:15-9:20 AM to clear security before the 9:30 AM window.

If you DON'T have Early Entry, there is literally zero benefit to arriving before 10 AM because you'll just be standing outside the gates waiting instead of sleeping in at your resort or enjoying a leisurely breakfast. Arrive just before 10 AM when the park opens to everyone.

Traffic Is Going to Be BRUTAL

Road closures for the race will cause massive traffic delays throughout Walt Disney World. What normally takes 15 minutes to drive could easily take 45 minutes or longer, depending on which roads are closed and how traffic is being rerouted.

Disney transportation including buses, monorails, and Skyliner may also have serious disruptions and delays. If you're relying on Disney transportation to get to EPCOT on the morning of April 19, plan for 30-60 minutes EXTRA on top of normal travel times.

The Crowds Are Going to Be INSANE at EPCOT

The 10 a.m. opening means every single guest enters at the same time instead of trickling in over morning hours, which creates immediate chaos:

  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will have multi-hour waits within 30-60 minutes of opening
  • Test Track, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, Frozen Ever After all getting slammed immediately
  • Intense crowding throughout the entire park from the second the gates open

Plus, runDisney weekends attract MASSIVE crowds beyond just race participants, as many runners bring families and friends who don't run but visit the parks, boosting attendance above typical spring weekends. April 19 will be way more crowded than a normal April Saturday.

What You Should Do Instead of EPCOT

If you're visiting Walt Disney World for multiple days in mid-April, visit EPCOT on literally any other day with regular hours and use April 19 for:

  • Magic Kingdom (normal hours)
  • Hollywood Studios (normal hours)
  • Animal Kingdom (normal hours)
  • Disney Springs
  • Resort pool day
  • Literally anything else

If You're Stuck Going to EPCOT on April 19

Unfortunately, if April 19 is your only possible EPCOT day because of ticket type or travel schedule. Here's what you need to do:

  • Accept that you cannot rope drop with standard advantages
  • Build MASSIVE extra time for travel accounting for road closures and traffic • Set realistic expectations for absolutely brutal crowds and wait times
  • Use Lightning Lane strategically to bypass standby lines
  • Focus on Flower & Garden Festival experiences instead of trying to hit tons of attractions

The Bottom Line

Don't show up at EPCOT at 9 a.m. on April 19 expecting normal park opening because the gates will still be closed, and you'll be standing outside like an idiot while runners finish their race. The park opens at 10 a.m. with Early Entry at 9:30 a.m. for resort guests ONLY.

Expect road closures, massive traffic delays, and elevated crowds, making this one of the worst EPCOT days of the entire spring. The delayed opening is great if you like sleeping in, but the trade-off is intense crowding and immediately long wait times once the park finally opens. You've been warned.
