The fate of one of Disney World’s oldest attractions has taken another turn.
For months, the Liberty Belle Riverboat was widely believed to be gone. The vessel disappeared from view last summer as construction ramped up around Magic Kingdom Park, and online speculation quickly filled in the gaps.
The Liberty Belle — an opening-day attraction dating back to 1971 — has now been located intact in a backstage area, contradicting persistent rumors that Disney had scrapped the riverboat entirely.
A Classic Attraction Removed as Magic Kingdom Shifts
The Liberty Belle operated for decades along the Rivers of America, offering a slow-moving loop around Frontierland and Liberty Square. The steam-powered vessel passed scenes inspired by early American history, including audio-animatronic settlers, Native American villages, and colonial-era river traffic.
The attraction was designed as both transportation and atmosphere. Its presence helped define the visual identity of the waterfront, particularly in Liberty Square, where the river framed the land’s historical setting.
That changed in July 2025.
Disney closed both the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island as part of a major expansion plan. The area is being redeveloped into a new Cars-themed land alongside a separate Disney Villains project.
Work began almost immediately. Water levels dropped across the river basin, and demolition crews moved into the space that had previously housed the island and its surrounding waterways.
Around the same time, the Liberty Belle was quietly removed.
Its absence triggered immediate speculation. With no official update from Disney, claims that the vessel had been dismantled spread quickly across social media and fan forums.

The location is not accessible to guests and sits well outside the park’s public-facing areas. The boat appears structurally intact, with no visible signs of dismantling.
The riverboat was first moved to the area in August 2025, shortly after its removal from the Rivers of America. It was later spotted near a boat ramp, leading to speculation that it could be transported elsewhere.
Instead, the Liberty Belle has remained in roughly the same location for months, suggesting Disney has not yet made a final decision about its future.
The company has not commented publicly on any plans for the attraction.
Fan theories have filled the void. Some have suggested the boat could be repurposed for transportation across Bay Lake, potentially linking the Transportation and Ticket Center with Magic Kingdom. Others have floated the idea of relocating it to another park, including its use in Fantasmic! at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Broader redevelopment continues. Disney has confirmed that the former Rivers of America footprint will be replaced by a Cars-inspired land — distinct from Radiator Springs in California Adventure — featuring new attractions and themed environments.
A second expansion focused on Disney Villains is also in development, though details remain limited. The project is expected to introduce darker-themed experiences and original ride systems, marking a tonal shift for Magic Kingdom.
Both lands remain several years away from opening.
