Disney’s Hollywood Studios Will Be Busier in Early May–Here’s Why

Walt Disney World Resort is gearing up for one of its biggest ride transformations of the year, and fans will not have to wait long to get an early taste of what is coming.

The well-known Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is entering a new era, with Disney replacing the longtime Aerosmith storyline with a fresh concept starring The Muppets. The ride will now follow Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem as they take over a high-energy Hollywood adventure after disappearing just before a major concert event.

The updated attraction leans heavily into a behind-the-scenes music industry storyline, where guests are pulled into the search for the missing band. Along the way, the experience includes a series of surprise celebrity appearances featuring Awkwafina, Danny Trejo, Neil Patrick Harris, and Weird Al Yankovic, adding to the atmosphere of a major star-studded event unfolding across Hollywood.

Music remains central to the experience, with five rotating songs that change each time guests ride. The soundtrack lineup includes “Song 2,” “Born To Be Wild” with Camilla the Chicken, “Love Rollercoaster” featuring Jennifer Hudson and Questlove, “Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)” featuring Def Leppard, and “Walking on Sunshine” featuring Kelly Clarkson. Each ride promises a different combination, reinforcing the unpredictable nature of the Electric Mayhem’s musical world.

Before the official opening day, Disney is rolling out preview opportunities for some of its most dedicated audiences. Cast members, Disney Vacation Club members, and Annual Passholders will all be included in early access plans, with cast member registration opening May 6, per reports, for select preview dates that allow participation with up to three guests per person.

This early access approach is part of Disney’s standard rollout strategy for major attractions, giving teams a chance to evaluate operations while building anticipation among fans. Similar patterns have been seen in other recent attraction updates, where preview periods sometimes transition into soft openings for broader guest access ahead of the advertised opening date.

That means while May 26 is currently set as the official debut, it may not necessarily be the first opportunity for guests to experience the ride once operational testing and previews begin.

Although the ride system itself is not being rebuilt, guests can expect a completely new narrative experience. The coaster’s signature launches and high-speed elements remain in place, but everything surrounding the ride has been redesigned to reflect the world of The Muppets. That includes updated queue storytelling, preshow sequences, and onboard scenes that immerse guests in the Electric Mayhem’s chaotic Hollywood journey.

The shift marks a major thematic change for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, replacing a decades-old rock-and-roll celebrity tie-in with a character-driven storyline rooted in one of Disney’s most recognizable franchises.

As excitement continues to grow, more information about preview dates and potential early openings is expected to surface in the coming weeks. For now, anticipation is building as Disney prepares to launch a reimagined version of a classic thrill ride, blending familiar coaster intensity with a completely new musical universe led by The Muppets.

He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
