Disney Cruise Line vacations are usually built around the idea of escape. Warm beaches, tropical drinks, relaxing ocean views, and private island stops have become defining parts of the experience for many travelers sailing through the Caribbean. Whether guests are visiting Disney Castaway Cay for the first time or returning to Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point after its recent debut, Disney’s private destinations are often marketed as some of the most relaxing days of an entire sailing.

But next week, guests visiting those ports may run into a very unusual change.
A temporary alcohol sales ban tied to The Bahamas’ upcoming general election is expected to affect several cruise destinations across the country, including Disney’s two private island locations. While the restriction is limited to one day, it could still noticeably alter the shore experience for passengers planning to spend the day enjoying beach bars and island beverages.
Temporary “Dry Day” Planned Across The Bahamas

The Bahamas is expected to enforce a nationwide restriction on alcohol sales during election hours on Tuesday, May 12.
The ban will reportedly remain active from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. local time while polls are open throughout the country. During that time, the sale of alcoholic beverages, referred to under Bahamian law as “intoxicating liquor,” is expected to be prohibited across the islands.
Because Disney’s cruise destinations operate within Bahamian territory, the restriction is expected to extend to both Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.
That means guests visiting Disney’s private beaches during the restricted window may temporarily lose access to bars and alcohol sales while ashore.
Disney Ships Potentially Impacted by the Restriction

Current cruise schedules indicate that two Disney Cruise Line vessels could be directly affected on May 12.
The Disney Wish is scheduled to dock at Castaway Cay, while the Disney Fantasy is expected to stop at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.
At this time, the restriction appears limited strictly to island-based alcohol sales. Onboard restaurants, lounges, bars, and beverage service aboard the ships are still expected to operate normally.
Disney Cruise Line has not publicly issued a detailed statement about the temporary policy. However, other cruise operators traveling through The Bahamas have already acknowledged the situation.
Royal Caribbean International confirmed it would comply with local regulations while clarifying that onboard beverage service would remain unaffected.
The company stated:
“Royal Caribbean is respecting and complying with all local laws and regulations, as we do with every destination we visit.”
Other Cruise Lines Also Facing the Same Issue
Disney is far from the only cruise operator navigating the election-day restriction.
Several major cruise lines maintain private destinations throughout The Bahamas, including Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises.
Destinations potentially affected include Great Stirrup Cay, Celebration Key, and Ocean Cay, all of which fall under Bahamian jurisdiction during the election period.
For cruise passengers unfamiliar with local election laws, the restriction may come as a surprise, particularly since private cruise destinations often feel disconnected from the regulations of the countries they operate within.
Why This Could Change the Disney Cruise Experience
For many adults sailing with Disney Cruise Line, the private island days are intentionally designed to feel different from the rest of the cruise. Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay offer beachside relaxation, tropical cocktails, and resort-style atmospheres that encourage guests to slow down and unwind.
A temporary pause on alcohol sales could noticeably shift that atmosphere during peak daytime hours.
Guests planning to spend time at Serenity Bay, the adults-only section of Castaway Cay, may especially notice the change. Others hoping to enjoy frozen cocktails, beachside drinks, or specialty beverages throughout the afternoon may find the experience slightly different than expected.
For travelers paying premium cruise prices, even temporary operational restrictions can feel significant when they affect one of the most anticipated portions of the vacation.
Election-Related Restrictions Are Rare but Not Unheard Of
While unusual for many travelers, election-day alcohol bans are not entirely uncommon in certain countries. Governments occasionally implement temporary restrictions during voting periods as part of broader public safety or election management policies.
Cruise passengers simply do not encounter them very often.
Because cruise vacations cross multiple international jurisdictions, local laws can occasionally affect onboard operations, shore excursions, or guest experiences in ways travelers may not anticipate while booking.
In this case, the restriction is expected to last only during polling hours and does not appear connected to any safety concerns at the destinations themselves.
Guests Visiting Next Week May Want To Prepare
Passengers sailing aboard the Disney Wish or Disney Fantasy on May 12 may want to adjust expectations slightly before arriving at Disney’s private island destinations.
Guests who planned to purchase drinks while onshore could encounter limited beverage availability during the election-related restriction window. Travelers may also want to keep timing in mind when planning beach activities, adult-only relaxation, or dining schedules during their island stop.
Outside of the temporary sales restriction, operations at Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay are expected to continue normally.
If you are sailing with Disney Cruise Line next week, this is probably one of those rare vacation details worth knowing ahead of time. A little planning now could make the island day feel a lot smoother once you step off the ship.
