‘Clone Wars’-Style Series With Luke, Han, and Leia Could Restart ‘Star Wars’ Franchise

For years, Star Wars animation has focused heavily on the prequel era, introducing animated versions of characters such as Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Count Dooku, and Ahsoka Tano. But the franchise still hasn’t fully explored the original trilogy cast in a major animated project. However, that may change sooner than we think.

Recent reports claim Luke Skywalker will appear in a future installment of the Tales anthology series, sparking renewed speculation that Lucasfilm may eventually deliver a project that features Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Luke in animation.

At the same time, rumors surrounding the sequel trilogy have once again resurfaced online, with some fans convinced Disney is looking for ways to move away from its divisive final three Skywalker Saga films.

While there’s no evidence the sequels are actually being removed from canon, the rumors have reignited debate surrounding the future of the franchise.

Many fans believe animation could provide the perfect way to revisit the original trilogy era without the complications of recasting legacy actors or relying heavily on digital de-aging technology.

Shows such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Bad Batch proved the animated side of the franchise can successfully expand beloved eras and characters. However, Luke, Han, and Leia have rarely been given substantial animated roles outside brief appearances in projects like Forces of Destiny and Galaxy of Adventures.

An animated film or Disney+ series centered entirely on the original trilogy heroes could allow Lucasfilm to revisit the Galactic Empire era while also exploring untold stories involving Darth Vader, Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, and the droids.

Whether the sequel trilogy rumors hold any truth remains unclear, but one thing is certain: fans still have a huge appetite for stories centered on the original Star Wars cast.
