Disney Alters Expedition Everest Queue at Animal Kingdom as Summer Crowds Rise

A lot of Disney World guests head straight for Expedition Everest expecting one thing from the single rider line: speed.

For years, the attraction became famous among frequent visitors because the single rider queue often moved dramatically faster than standby. Even when the posted wait climbed well over an hour, solo guests could sometimes get on the coaster in minutes.

That experience is now changing.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom recently introduced a new boarding system at Expedition Everest that appears designed to improve ride efficiency, but it is also slowing down the attraction’s once-beloved single rider line.

The adjustment happens in the final section of the queue before guests board the train. Instead of simply feeding everyone directly toward the platform, Cast Members are now separating parties into odd-numbered and even-numbered groups. Once divided, those groups are sent to different sides before loading begins.

The goal is to help Cast Members fill every row more efficiently and reduce empty seats on the trains.

Disney has also added pre-boarding video screens that explain how riders should secure restraints and store loose items before boarding. Combined together, the changes are clearly focused on speeding up operations.

And honestly, Disney probably sees this as a win.

Expedition Everest handles massive crowds every single day, especially now that Animal Kingdom is operating with fewer headline attractions during the transformation of DinoLand U.S.A. Anything that helps move guests through the ride faster likely becomes a priority for operations teams.

But while standby guests may benefit, single rider guests are feeling the downside.

Before the change, Cast Members frequently pulled from the single rider queue whenever there was an empty seat left by an uneven party. That system helped the line move quickly. Now, however, the odd/even sorting system already gives Cast Members a pool of guests to help fill those spaces.

That means single riders are being called far less often.

The line has not disappeared, but many guests are noticing that it no longer offers the huge advantage it once did. Some Disney fans online even believe this could eventually discourage more guests from using single rider altogether.

Others argue that the change makes total sense if it shortens the standby line for thousands of guests throughout the day.

The debate really comes down to what Disney values most right now: overall capacity or specialized queue advantages.

Based on the recent operational trends across Walt Disney World, the answer seems pretty clear.

Disney has spent the last few years focusing heavily on efficiency. Between Lightning Lane systems, stricter boarding procedures, virtual queues, and updated loading processes, the company is trying to maximize attraction throughput anywhere possible.

Expedition Everest is simply the latest attraction receiving that treatment.

For guests planning a trip to Animal Kingdom this summer, the biggest takeaway is simple: do not expect the single rider line to work the same way it did in the past.

It can still save time on the right day, but the “hidden shortcut” reputation may finally be disappearing.
