America is turning 250 this summer, and Disney has been building toward the moment since Veterans Day 2025. The Disney Celebrates America initiative has been adding pieces consistently across every platform and property the company operates, from the Rose Parade in January to the Portraits of Courage exhibit at EPCOT to the upcoming Soarin' Across America experience opening this summer at both Disney California Adventure and EPCOT. The celebration is everywhere Disney exists right now, and it culminates on the July 4th weekend with a 24-hour multi-platform broadcast and fireworks at both coasts.
This week the most immediately visible piece of the celebration arrived at Disneyland and it came in the form of brand new patriotic outfits for the two most recognizable characters in the history of the company.
Mickey and Minnie Mouse debuted new looks during LA Fleet Week at Disneyland, and the photos are worth looking at properly.
The Disney Outfits
Mickey's new look is a full patriotic tuxedo that takes his classic formal silhouette and transforms it entirely into something built for a national birthday celebration. The blue velvet tailcoat is covered in white stars. The light blue waistcoat features star-shaped buttons. The bowtie is sparkly white. The red pants keep the classic big white buttons, one of the most recognizable details in Mickey's visual vocabulary. Every element of the outfit communicates its occasion clearly while remaining unmistakably Mickey.
Minnie's approach is different and arguably more clever. Rather than creating an entirely new look, Disney took her classic red dress with white polka dots, one of the most iconic character costume designs in entertainment history, and transformed it through substitution. The polka dots are replaced by stars on both the dress and her signature bow. Sparkly touches appear at the waistband and at the center of the bow. The buttons on the chest are star-shaped. Blue layered underskirts add the third color of the American flag to an outfit that was previously only red and white.
The result is a Minnie outfit that is instantly recognizable as hers while being unmistakably patriotic. That balance is harder to achieve than it looks.
Where They Debuted
The new outfits made their first appearance at Disneyland during LA Fleet Week, which this year also marked the 250th anniversaries of the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. Disney hosted more than 100 Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen for a full day at the park as part of the Disney Celebrates America events leading up to July 4.
The day included a Navy band marching down Main Street, U.S.A., for a flag retreat ceremony in Town Square, a flyover by U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornets from Strike Fighter Squadron 94, and Mickey and Minnie appearing before Sleeping Beauty Castle in the new outfits for the first time. Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro presented U.S. military leaders with an American flag flown over Disneyland as a gesture of gratitude for 2.5 centuries of naval and marine service.
The Broader Disney Celebration
The new outfits are one visible piece of something significantly larger. Disney Celebrates America has been running since Veterans Day 2025 and continues through the July 4th weekend with a scope that touches every corner of what Disney operates.
Soarin' Across America is opening this summer at both Disney California Adventure and EPCOT. The Portraits of Courage exhibit at EPCOT, featuring more than 60 oil paintings of post-9/11 veterans by former President George W. Bush, has been extended through the July 4th weekend. Disney donated $2.5 million to Blue Star Families as part of the military family support commitment at the center of the initiative.
The celebration ends on the July 4th weekend with a 24-hour broadcast across Disney+, Hulu, ABC, Disney Channel, ESPN, Freeform, FX, and National Geographic, anchored by David Muir. Fireworks will be broadcast from both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort on July 3, 4, and 5.
The Simple Version
Mickey has a blue velvet tailcoat covered in white stars. Minnie's polka dots are now stars with blue underskirts. They debuted the looks at Disneyland in front of Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen during LA Fleet Week. Disney has been building toward America's 250th birthday for months, and these are the outfits that put a face on the whole celebration.
