Universal Backtracks After Rumors Spread Over New Ride Opening

A brief website update sparked confusion among Universal Studios Hollywood fans.

Universal Studios Hollywood has spent the past year increasingly promoting Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, a new coaster based on the blockbuster film franchise. The attraction is expected to be one of the resort's biggest additions in years and its first high-speed outdoor roller coaster.

The ride has become a regular topic of discussion online as testing continues behind the scenes. Guests have frequently reported spotting riders on the attraction during park hours, fueling speculation that an opening announcement was imminent.

Universal has consistently said the coaster will debut in summer 2026. Until this week, however, the resort had not provided a specific date.

Opening Date Appears, Then Disappears

That changed when fans noticed a new detail on the official Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift webpage.

The page briefly listed June 26, 2026, as the attraction's opening date. News of the update quickly spread across social media, where many assumed Universal had quietly confirmed when the coaster would begin welcoming guests.

Universal later removed the date from its website and issued a statement on X denying that the opening date had been confirmed.

“An opening date was incorrectly posted on the Universal Studios Hollywood website and we apologize for the confusion,” the company wrote. “Stay tuned for more to come!”

The statement leaves the attraction's opening date unknown.

Universal has not announced when it plans to reveal a new date, though the resort continues to say the coaster will open this summer.

A Major New Addition for the Fast & Furious Franchise

Whenever it opens, Hollywood Drift will replace Fast & Furious – Supercharged – which closed in the Universal Studio Tour last year – as the franchise's headline attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The coaster will reach speeds of up to 72 mph and use rotating ride vehicles that are designed to simulate drifting. Universal has described the attraction as a first for the park.

Guests will board one of four vehicles inspired by cars from the Fast & Furious films. The lineup includes Dominic Toretto's Dodge Charger, Han's Mazda RX-7, Brian O'Conner's Nissan Skyline GT-R and Brian's orange Toyota Supra.

The project is also expanding beyond California.

Universal Studios Florida is currently building its own Fast & Furious coaster following the closure of Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit. Construction is underway, with new track recently installed near the attraction's future vertical spike.

The Orlando version will not be identical to Hollywood Drift (which notably twists above the park's iconic escalators), but it will feature similar rotating ride vehicles capable of spinning 360 degrees during the ride experience.

For now, the California attraction remains the closest to opening.

The only thing Universal has confirmed is that guests can expect to ride Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift sometime this summer.
