A legal deadline uncovered through a public records request has confirmed what some Disneyland Resort fans have thought for a long time: Autopia is operating on borrowed time.
The Closure Order Hidden in Plain Sight

Climate journalist and X user @Sammy_Roth surfaced the news on the platform formerly known as Twitter after obtaining government records through a California Public Records Act request:
Plus a little scoop for Disneyland fans like me: Autopia is legally required to close by February 1, 2027. Learned via the California Public Records Act!

The records reveal that around the same time Disneyland Resort publicly announced plans to transition Autopia to electric power, the Southern California Disney park quietly reached an agreement with the California government to shut down the gas-powered Tomorrowland attraction by February 1, 2027.
The closure isn't inevitable, however. If Disneyland Resort successfully retrofits Autopia's engines to electric power before February 1, 2027, the ride can stay open. The deadline only triggers a shutdown if the attraction is still running on gas power on that date.
How It Came to This

In August 2024, Disneyland Resort paid a $56,250 fine to the California Air Resources Board for violations related to small off-road engines and evaporative emissions requirements for the Autopia attraction. Disney acknowledged that ride equipment had been delivered or imported into California in a way that “was not materially the same as equipment certified under Disney‘s executive order.” A portion of that fine went toward the Cleaner Air Greener Schools project, which installs air purifiers and air quality sensors in California public schools.
The fine and the subsequent agreement appear to be directly connected, with Disneyland Resort committing to a modernization timeline as part of its resolution with California regulators.
Where Things Stand Right Now

Autopia is currently open and running on its original gas-powered engines. Disneyland Resort has publicly committed to reopening the 70-year-old Tomorrowland ride with new electric engines in late 2026. Some unofficial sources have suggested the refurbishment timeline may have shifted to early 2027, but Disneyland Resort has not confirmed any change to the previously announced schedule.
What is confirmed is the hard stop: gas-powered Autopia cannot legally operate past January 31, 2027.
