Marvel Studios may not be changing Avengers: Doomsday‘s (2026) release plans, but Disney's latest promotional campaign suggests the conversation surrounding the film is beginning to evolve.
The studio recently reaffirmed that Avengers: Doomsday will still arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, despite months of speculation surrounding the production's demanding schedule. At the same time, promotional material unveiled during CineEurope 2026 has revealed an intriguing change, with Pedro Pascal's Mister Fantastic replacing Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom as Marvel Studios' featured character on a major Disney banner.
The updated artwork immediately caught fans' attention because Doctor Doom remains the central villain of Avengers: Doomsday. Downey's unexpected return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Victor Von Doom instead of Tony Stark has become one of the defining talking points of Marvel's Multiverse Saga.
Yet Disney's latest promotional material places Reed Richards at the forefront instead, hinting that Marvel may already be emphasizing the heroes expected to shape the MCU after its current saga reaches its conclusion.
The adjustment should not be interpreted as a change to the film itself. Doctor Doom remains the driving force behind Avengers: Doomsday, where the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men are expected to unite against him before the story continues in Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
If anything, the banner reflects Reed Richards' growing importance following the introduction of Marvel's First Family in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025). Since that film's release, Mister Fantastic has increasingly been presented as one of the franchise's defining leaders heading into Marvel's next chapter.
While Disney's artwork sparked discussion, the company has been equally clear about another aspect of Avengers: Doomsday: its release schedule.
Earlier this year at CinemaCon, Disney confirmed that the film remains scheduled for December 18, 2026. That announcement effectively ended rumors that the blockbuster might be delayed because of its ambitious production timeline. The date creates one of the most anticipated theatrical matchups of the year.
Warner Bros. is also targeting December 18 for Dune: Part Three (2026), creating a direct battle between two of Hollywood's largest franchises during the holiday season. Fans have already embraced the matchup with the nickname “Dunesday,” anticipating fierce competition at the global box office.
Dune: Part Three will secure IMAX auditoriums, limiting premium-format availability for Avengers: Doomsday. Rather than avoiding that challenge by moving release dates, Disney has instead invested further in its own premium theatrical exhibition.
Its newly announced Infinity Vision certification program establishes technical standards for participating large-format cinemas. Certified locations will feature advanced laser projection, improved brightness, enhanced color performance, and upgraded surround sound technology intended to elevate the viewing experience.
Disney also revealed that Infinity Vision will officially debut with two Marvel presentations. The upcoming theatrical return of Avengers: Endgame—renamed Avengers: Endgame Encore for the event—and Avengers: Doomsday will become the first releases shown under the Infinity Vision banner, reinforcing Disney's commitment to encouraging audiences to experience its biggest films on the largest screens possible.
Although marketing materials now highlight Mister Fantastic more prominently, Doctor Doom's role remains unchanged.
Downey's villain is still expected to headline Marvel Studios' biggest crossover since Avengers: Endgame, with heroes from across the MCU assembling to confront one of Marvel Comics' most iconic adversaries.
Looking further ahead, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has already indicated that the MCU after Secret Wars will resemble a reset rather than a direct continuation of the Infinity and Multiverse Sagas, with the X-Men expected to occupy a central position.
Exactly where Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four fit into that future has yet to be revealed. However, Disney's latest marketing decisions suggest Marvel is beginning to introduce the characters who could define its next era while maintaining Doctor Doom as the immediate threat audiences will face when Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters this December.
