Release dates for major Marvel Studios films are usually locked in years in advance. The studio’s blockbuster calendar has long been one of the most carefully managed schedules in Hollywood.
Now, a small shift may be under consideration.

New reports suggest Marvel may be evaluating a change to the release plans for Avengers: Doomsday (2026), the next major crossover film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The project marks Marvel’s first Avengers movie since Avengers: Endgame (2019), the record-breaking culmination of the Infinity Saga that grossed nearly $2.8 billion worldwide and closed out several of the franchise’s longest-running storylines.
Marvel’s Next Avengers Film Anchors the Multiverse Saga
Marvel Studios has positioned Avengers: Doomsday as one of the central entries in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. The film is expected to bring together characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe as they confront a growing multiversal threat.
Robert Downey Jr. will portray Doctor Doom, a major villain in Marvel Comics. The film is designed to set up the larger crossover event planned for Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).

The ensemble cast reflects Marvel’s typical crossover approach.
Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, Anthony Mackie appears as Sam Wilson’s Captain America, and Sebastian Stan reprises his role as Bucky Barnes. Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Letitia Wright’s Shuri, Winston Duke’s M’Baku, and Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi are also confirmed to appear.
Additional MCU characters include Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, David Harbour as Red Guardian, and Danny Ramirez as the new Falcon.
The lineup expands further with characters connected to Marvel’s broader multiverse. Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, and Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm will appear alongside Tom Hiddleston’s Loki.

Legacy actors from earlier Marvel films — including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden from the X-Men franchise — are also part of the expanding ensemble.
Marvel initially scheduled the film to premiere on December 18, 2026, placing it in the competitive holiday movie corridor.
That date, however, coincides with another major release.
Report Suggests Marvel May Move the Release Date
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 3 (2026) is currently scheduled to open on the same day as Avengers: Doomsday. The overlap could present challenges for Marvel Studios, particularly when it comes to premium theatrical formats.
Reports indicate Dune 3 will hold an exclusive three-week IMAX run. If that arrangement remains in place, Avengers: Doomsday would be unable to access IMAX screens until January 2027.

For a large-scale Marvel Studios production designed with IMAX and premium formats in mind, losing those screens during opening weeks could affect the film’s box office performance.
That scenario may be prompting discussions behind the scenes.
According to film commentator John Campea, Marvel has explored the possibility of shifting the release date. After contacting someone in “exhibitor relations,” Campea said that “very non-committal discussions have taken place” about moving the film earlier.
The potential adjustment would move Avengers: Doomsday from December 18 to December 11.
The earlier slot recently opened after another franchise changed its plans. The next Jumanji film vacated the December 11 date, shifting its release to December 25 instead.
That shift leaves a clearer path for another major blockbuster to take over the earlier weekend.

If Marvel chooses to move Avengers: Doomsday, the film would avoid a direct opening-day clash with Dune 3 while retaining access to IMAX screens during its launch.
The decision could prove important for the MCU’s upcoming phase.
In the years following Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced a more competitive theatrical landscape. While films such as Captain America: Brave New World (2025), Thunderbolts* (2025), and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) have generated solid results, they have not matched the franchise’s earlier billion-dollar totals.
The broader superhero genre has also shown signs of audience fatigue.

The Marvels (2023) became the lowest-grossing MCU film, highlighting the challenge Marvel now faces in maintaining the level of box office dominance that once defined the franchise.
That context makes Avengers: Doomsday one of the studio’s most closely watched projects.
The film will unite characters from across the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and other Marvel properties as the Multiverse Saga moves toward its conclusion.
One character who will not appear is Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Instead, Holland will lead Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), a separate Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures production scheduled for release earlier that year.
Marvel has not confirmed any change to the Avengers: Doomsday release date.
