‘Harry Potter’ Star Publicly Calls Out JK Rowling: “Embarrassing”

The divide surrounding the Harry Potter franchise is showing no signs of disappearing.

JK Rowling has spent years at the center of an increasingly public dispute over her views on sex and gender identity. The author has repeatedly denied accusations that she is transphobic, while continuing to make outspoken statements on social media.

Her position has also created distance between Rowling and several actors associated with the Wizarding World. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have all publicly expressed support for transgender people, placing them at odds with the woman who created their most famous characters.

The disagreement has continued even as Warner Bros. Discovery prepares a new generation of Harry Potter stars for HBO's upcoming television reboot. Rowling remains directly involved in the franchise as an executive producer on the series.

Now another actor from the original films has publicly criticized Rowling — this time in response to one of her own posts on X.

Sean Biggerstaff Responds Directly to JK Rowling

Sean Biggerstaff, who played Gryffindor Quidditch captain Oliver Wood in the Harry Potter films, responded to Rowling on August 20 after the author posted about the criticism she receives online.

Rowling wrote: “If you walked up to Mike Tyson in a bar and punched him in the face, I doubt ‘you can't hit back because I'm so puny!' would save you from consequences. Same on X. If you want to punch me in public but don't want to risk a brain injury in return, stick to your own weight class.”

Biggerstaff replied directly beneath the post with a much shorter assessment.

“This is extraordinarily embarrassing,” he wrote in a direct response to Rowling. “Listen to yourself, for God's sake.”

Rowling has not publicly acknowledged Biggerstaff's response.

The exchange adds another Harry Potter name to the long-running conversation surrounding Rowling's social media activity. Her comments on gender identity have attracted controversy for years – particularly after she mocked the phrase “people who menstruate” in 2020 and argued that biological sex cannot be erased.

She subsequently published a lengthy essay discussing gender identity, medical transition, and single-sex spaces. Rowling has consistently rejected the claim that her views are motivated by hostility toward transgender people.

Her commentary has remained a major part of her public presence. In 2024, Rowling challenged Scotland's new hate crime law by referring to several trans women as men and publicly daring authorities to arrest her.

The following year, tensions between Rowling and the original Harry Potter cast surfaced again.

Emma Watson addressed their strained relationship during a September 2025 appearance on Jay Shetty's podcast, saying there was “no world in which I could ever cancel her out.”

Watson said she could still “treasure Jo” despite their opposing views and expressed regret that they had not been able to have a conversation about their differences.

Rowling responded days later in a lengthy post of her own. She accused Watson of participating in the “trashing of women's rights,” called her “ignorant of how ignorant she is,” and rejected the idea that their former relationship could remain untouched by Watson's public criticism.

The author also addressed both Watson and Radcliffe directly.

“Emma and Dan in particular have both made it clear over the last few years that they think our former professional association gives them a particular right – nay, obligation – to critique me and my views in public. Years after they finished acting in Potter, they continue to assume the role of de facto spokespeople for the world I created.”

Grint was not named in that message, although he has also spoken publicly in support of the transgender community.

Biggerstaff's latest response is considerably shorter, but it underscores how the debate surrounding Rowling continues to involve performers from across the original film series — not just its three central stars.

HBO Moves Ahead With a New Era of Harry Potter

The dispute is unfolding as Harry Potter prepares for one of its biggest changes since the original Warner Bros. film series ended in 2011.

HBO's television adaptation is scheduled to premiere in December, beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The title differs from Sorcerer's Stone, the name used for the first book and movie in the United States and several other territories.

The new trio is led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer takes on Minerva McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu stars as Severus Snape and Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid.

Other cast members include Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, and Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby as Petunia and Vernon Dursley.

Warwick Davis is also returning to the franchise as Hogwarts professor Filius Flitwick.

HBO is already planning well beyond the debut season. The show has been renewed for a second season before its first episode has aired, with production expected to continue into the events of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Nicholas Hoult has joined the series as Gilderoy Lockhart, one of the major new characters introduced in the second book.

The production is also searching for a new Ginny Weasley following Gracie Cochrane's departure after Season 1 filming. Ginny, played by Bonnie Wright in the original films, becomes increasingly important as the series progresses and plays a central role in Chamber of Secrets.

Rowling's involvement remains another unavoidable part of the reboot's rollout. She serves as an executive producer, a decision that has generated criticism alongside broader questions about whether the books needed another screen adaptation so soon after the original films.

HBO has defended Rowling's involvement and maintained that her personal views have not affected casting or hiring decisions.

For the franchise, however, the conversation surrounding its creator remains difficult to separate from its future. Biggerstaff's two-sentence response is the latest reminder that disagreements first aired years ago are still playing out publicly — even as Harry Potter prepares to begin again with an entirely new cast.
