‘Harry Potter’ Reboot Faces Setback as HBO Seeks New Lead

HBO is looking for a new star.

The network's Harry Potter television series is only months away from its first season debut, but attention has already shifted to the next chapter. Production on Season 2 is expected to begin in August, and one important role is suddenly back on the market.

The reboot is HBO's biggest bet on the Wizarding World since the original film franchise concluded in 2011. Instead of adapting multiple books at once, the studio is giving each novel its own season, beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

The first season stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Veteran actors including John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Nick Frost, Paapa Essiedu, Katherine Parkinson, Johnny Flynn, and Bertie Carvel round out the cast.

Filming on Season 1 has already wrapped ahead of its planned December premiere, meaning much of HBO's focus has turned to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

That preparation has now hit an unexpected obstacle.

HBO Reopens Casting for Ginny Weasley

HBO has issued a new casting notice through Cast It Talent after the actor originally cast as Ginny Weasley left the production.

Gracie Cochrane was announced in the role earlier this year but exited the series in May due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

The vacancy leaves HBO searching for a replacement before production begins on the second season.

The casting notice is open to UK-based girls aged 10 to 12.

Applicants are asked to “prepare a short poem or story of your choosing” and ” record a short video telling us a bit about yourself.”

Submissions close on July 17, 2026.

The timing matters because Ginny moves from a background character to one of the story's central figures in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

As Ron's younger sister, she starts her first year at Hogwarts before unknowingly becoming possessed by Tom Riddle's enchanted diary. The mystery surrounding Ginny drives much of the book's plot.

Her importance only increases across later stories.

Ginny goes on to become a member of Dumbledore's Army, plays Quidditch for Gryffindor, fights in the Battle of Hogwarts, and eventually begins a relationship with Harry Potter.

Reboot Continues Despite Ongoing Scrutiny

Cochrane's departure marks the first confirmed cast exit since HBO unveiled its young ensemble.

The series has also generated headlines for reasons beyond casting.

Author JK Rowling remains an executive producer, and her involvement has continued to divide fans following years of controversy surrounding her comments about the transgender community.

John Lithgow, who portrays Albus Dumbledore, has spoken publicly about weighing whether to take part in the series.

The actor previously revealed that he “considered quitting the series” because of concerns that appearing in the adaptation could be viewed as supporting Rowling's views.

He also acknowledged that Rowling's anti-transgender sentiments would likely remain part of the conversation, saying the issue will come up “in every interview I will ever do for the rest of my life.”

Despite the latest casting change, HBO has given no indication that production plans have shifted.
