It’s hard to believe, but it’s been almost 15 years since we last saw Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and the rest of the magical world on the big screen in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011).
Even more surprising, it’s been nearly 30 years since J.K. Rowling—then relatively unknown and now highly controversial—introduced us to The Boy Who Lived in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s (Sorcerer’s) Stone.

Back then, Harry Potter quickly became a cultural phenomenon, shaping much of the world’s imagination, and it’s almost impossible to picture life without those seven books and eight films.
In 2021, whispers began circulating about HBO Max working on a new Harry Potter series. After two years of waiting, the series was finally confirmed. While details are still scarce, Warner Bros. has announced that it will explore the books in more depth than the films did and is set to span a decade!

John Lithgow in Final Talks for the Iconic Role
With casting still underway for the young actors set to play Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, one legendary name has emerged as the frontrunner for Hogwarts’ beloved headmaster.
According to Deadline, veteran actor John Lithgow is in final negotiations to take on the role of Albus Dumbledore.
“A beloved actor is poised to play a beloved Harry Potter character. Six-time Emmy winner John Lithgow is in final negotiations to portray Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO‘s high-profile series adaptation of the hugely popular fantasy books, sources tell Deadline.”

HBO has remained tight-lipped regarding casting, issuing a statement that reads: “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
A Bold Choice for a Fan-Favorite Character
If the deal is finalized, Lithgow will step into the shoes of a character previously portrayed by the late Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the Harry Potter film series.

Unlike his predecessors, Lithgow is an American actor, best known for his work in 3rd Rock from the Sun and The Crown, where he earned an Emmy for his portrayal of Winston Churchill. His ability to transform into deeply layered characters makes him an intriguing choice for the role of Dumbledore.
While the news has sparked excitement, it has also raised questions among fans who have long associated Dumbledore with British actors.
However, Lithgow’s extensive range and commanding screen presence suggest he may be more than capable of capturing the essence of the wise and enigmatic Hogwarts headmaster.

What to Expect from the New Series
Warner Bros. has promised a more faithful retelling of the Harry Potter books, with each season of the show expected to focus on one book from the series. The project, which will reportedly span ten years, aims to explore storylines and character arcs in greater depth than the original films.
Casting has been a top priority for the production team, and while the showrunners have yet to announce who will play the Golden Trio, securing a well-established actor for Dumbledore could set the tone for the rest of the cast.
The Harry Potter reboot is currently in pre-production, with HBO aiming for a release sometime in late 2026 or early 2027. Until then, fans can only speculate on how Lithgow (if confirmed) will bring his own interpretation to the legendary role of Dumbledore.
