It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly three decades since J.K. Rowling introduced the magical world of Harry Potter with her debut novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone—or Sorcerer’s Stone as it’s known in the United States. What began as a single book has blossomed into one of the most iconic franchises in entertainment history. The series’ seven books led to eight blockbuster films and the Fantastic Beasts spin-off franchise, propelling Rowling from an unknown British author to the first writer to become a billionaire.

But in recent years, Rowling’s reputation has taken a significant hit. Once hailed as one of the world’s most beloved authors, she is now one of its most polarizing.
Rowling’s outspoken views on transgender issues have alienated many fans, particularly in the LGBTQ+ community. She has been labeled a TERF—trans-exclusionary radical feminist—due to her repeated statements claiming that trans women are not women and that their existence undermines the experiences of biological women. These comments have sparked widespread backlash and called into question her legacy.

In April 2023, Warner Bros. announced plans for a Harry Potter reboot series for Max (formerly HBO Max). While some fans were thrilled at the prospect of revisiting the Wizarding World, others were less enthusiastic, feeling it was too soon for a reboot or questioning the necessity of Rowling’s involvement in the project.
For the past 18 months, HBO has largely avoided addressing the controversy, confirming only that Rowling would serve as an executive producer. However, recent comments by HBO Chief Casey Bloys have reignited the debate.
During a November 12 press conference, Bloys revealed that Rowling has played an active role in the development of the series, including selecting its writer and director.
Bloys also confirmed that Rowling’s controversial views have not influenced the hiring process for the production team, stating that the studio’s relationship with Rowling remains strong.
In a statement to Variety, Bloys highlighted Warner Bros.’ longstanding collaboration with Rowling, calling her contributions “invaluable.” The statement went on to defend Rowling’s right to express her views, emphasizing that the studio’s focus remains on delivering a faithful adaptation of the beloved books.
“We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter—the heartwarming books that speak to the power of friendship, resolve, and acceptance,” the statement read. “J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”
Despite the studio’s position, Rowling’s public stance on transgender issues has strained her relationships with many of the franchise’s stars. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson—who portrayed Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the original films—have all publicly supported the trans community and distanced themselves from Rowling.
Rowling, however, seems unfazed by these fractured relationships. In past interviews, she has stated that even if the actors were to apologize, she would not forgive them, and their bonds are irreparably broken.
Warner Bros.’ new Harry Potter series is slated to premiere in 2026 and have a 10-season run planned. The reboot promises to delve deeper into the books than the original films, offering fans a more detailed exploration of the Wizarding World.

Casting for the series is currently underway, with the studio searching for new actors to portray Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
As the series moves forward, fans remain divided. While some are eager to see Rowling’s books brought to life in a new way, others believe HBO should distance itself from her and her controversial views.
