Jude Law recently revealed a change he made to Fantastic Beasts, the Harry Potter prequel series.
Law starred as a young Albus Dumbledore alongside Mads Mikkelsen (Gellert Grindelwald) and Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander). Dumbledore must help Scamander and his friends defeat Grindelwald, who he’s unable to fight due to a blood pact made in youth.
During a recent video interview with Variety, Law revealed that his love for Dumbledore led him to pen one of the character’s lines: “The fact that everything didn’t go precisely to plan was precisely the plan.”
“I wrote this line!” Law exclaimed. “I just thought that it was very Dumbledore.”
Law connected with Dumbledore long before he played the character, having read the original books to his children:
“He was absolutely the sort of heartbeat of those books. Or, rather, the spirit. Harry was the heartbeat. There was something in the heart of Dumbledore — there was something in the spirit of the man that I really liked. And, in fact, playing him put me in a very good place.”
Controversial Harry Potter series author J.K. Rowling offered Law insights into Dumbledore’s psyche, suggesting he viewed himself as a “monster” due to past actions.
“Jo Rowling always said to me that he saw himself as a monster because of the way he had behaved in the past, and he was always trying to forgive himself,” Law explained. “But I just always felt like he was a good, kind man and it’s nice playing good, kind men.”
Future of the Fantastic Beasts Series
After the initial success of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), critical response to the series has been mixed. Critics have noted that the later films struggled to capture the magic that made the original Harry Potter films a cultural phenomenon. This decline in critical acclaim has led to significant challenges for the franchise, ultimately resulting in the cancellation of future films.
Factors contributing to this downturn include inconsistent storytelling, character development issues, and the mounting controversies surrounding J.K. Rowling. The author has faced scrutiny for her statements on various social issues, particularly regarding the transgender community. Public sentiment has reflected a growing divide between her fanbase and those who view her commentary as harmful. This tension casts a shadow over the Fantastic Beasts project as audiences grapple with the implications of supporting a franchise led by a controversial figure.
