‘Fantastic Beasts’ Series Shelved by Warner Bros., No Plans for Future Films Following Scandal

The Fantastic Beasts franchise, once envisioned as a cornerstone of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World expansion, has come to a surprising halt.

After the initial success of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2016, Warner Bros. aimed to launch a five-part film series exploring the past lives of legendary characters like Dumbledore and Grindelwald. However, following lackluster box office returns, production controversies, and mixed fan reactions, the franchise’s future has been scrapped, confirmed by series star Eddie Redmayne. This unexpected end marks a definitive pause in what was intended to be a sprawling addition to the Harry Potter universe, leaving fans questioning what’s next for the Wizarding World.

A Promising Start: Fantastic Beasts’ Initial Success

When Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hit theaters, the film was a breath of fresh air for fans eager to revisit the magical realm created by J.K. Rowling. With a new protagonist, Newt Scamander, and a whole range of magical creatures, the film brought in over $814 million at the box office, setting a strong foundation for Warner Bros.’ ambitious plan.

Newt, played by Eddie Redmayne, was quirky and unique, resonating well with fans who appreciated the film’s lighter, creature-focused storyline. However, with each sequel, the franchise shifted away from Newt’s adventures and leaned heavily into complex political and dark magical narratives, which ultimately challenged its mass appeal.

Box Office Struggles: Diminishing Returns and Audience Interest

After the first film, the next two installments faced noticeable struggles.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) garnered only $654 million worldwide, a stark drop from its predecessor.

In 2022, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore saw an even steeper decline, earning just $405 million, less than half of the original’s total. As the box office numbers declined, so did fan enthusiasm, with critics and audiences alike noting that the series had strayed from the lighthearted charm of Harry Potter, opting instead for darker, politically charged plotlines that lacked the emotional resonance of the original series.

Controversial Cast Changes: Depp’s Exit and Fan Reactions

One of the most controversial events affecting Fantastic Beasts was the recasting of Grindelwald. Johnny Depp’s involvement in legal disputes with ex-wife Amber Heard led Warner Bros. to request his resignation after the second film. Depp’s portrayal of Grindelwald had been a polarizing choice, but his exit was even more divisive.

Warner Bros. replaced him with Mads Mikkelsen for The Secrets of Dumbledore, adding a fresh interpretation to the character. Although Mikkelsen’s performance received praise, the abrupt shift impacted continuity and generated uncertainty among fans already lukewarm about the franchise’s direction.

With this tied to the low box office numbers, the film has taken on scandal after scandal, leading it to an unsuccessful future.

Why Fantastic Beasts Didn’t Replicate Harry Potter’s Magic

One of the biggest challenges for Fantastic Beasts was that it didn’t capture the simplicity and relatability that fueled Harry Potter’s success. Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s journey was one of friendship, loyalty, and courage, universally relatable themes that audiences of all ages embraced. In contrast, Fantastic Beasts leaned on darker, more political conflicts centered on Dumbledore and Grindelwald, characters whose allure, while intriguing, didn’t create the same emotional connection. Without a central “trio” or a coming-of-age storyline, Fantastic Beasts struggled to bring audiences back with the same enthusiasm that had defined Harry Potter’s run.

The New Era of Harry Potter: TV Reboot in the Works

Despite Fantastic Beasts’ cancellation, Warner Bros. is still committed to Rowling’s Wizarding World. In a recent announcement, the studio revealed plans for a Harry Potter television series reboot. This new series will reimagine Rowling’s original books, casting fresh faces in the iconic roles and bringing fans a longer, more detailed adaptation of each novel. Warner Bros. hopes this new format will capture new generations while deepening the storyline and character development via HBO.

The decision has divided fans: some are eager to see a more faithful, extensive take on Harry Potter’s journey, while others are attached to the original films and worry a reboot could detract from the legacy. Nevertheless, Warner Bros. sees the TV reboot as a chance to revitalize interest in the Wizarding World, leaning into a format that has proven immensely popular for major franchises.

With Fantastic Beasts winding down, Universal Orlando Resort may also face challenges with its upcoming Fantastic Beasts-themed area at Epic Universe, scheduled to open in 2025. This new theme park will feature a Ministry of Magic section based partly on the Fantastic Beasts storyline. While the Wizarding World’s immersive appeal is undeniable, the lack of an active Fantastic Beasts film series could impact long-term interest in this new area.

Unlike the timeless popularity of Harry Potter, which drives massive foot traffic to Universal’s existing Wizarding World attractions, Fantastic Beasts doesn’t enjoy the same level of devoted fanbase. If the franchise fades from the public eye, Epic Universe may face a steeper challenge keeping fans engaged with the Fantastic Beasts-themed attractions. However, as long as it leans on key elements shared with the main Harry Potter storyline, it may still capture enough attention to sustain interest.

Redmayne Bids Farewell to Newt Scamander

As Warner Bros. turns the page on Fantastic Beasts, Eddie Redmayne has confirmed that this is likely the end of his journey as Newt Scamander. Speaking with ComicBook, Redmayne shared, “I think they probably have [seen the last of Newt].” Though he deferred the final decision to Warner Bros. and Rowling, Redmayne’s statement all but confirms that the planned five-film arc will be cut short, leaving Newt’s story incomplete.

The Wizarding World’s Path Forward

Fantastic Beasts may have fallen short of expectations, but it remains an important chapter in the larger Wizarding World. Through the ups and downs, it expanded on Rowling’s magical universe, adding a rich history and backstory that enhanced fans’ understanding of beloved characters like Dumbledore. Warner Bros., meanwhile, is banking on the upcoming Harry Potter TV series to reignite the magic and connect with new and old fans alike.

For now, Eddie Redmayne is moving on, with his upcoming thriller series Day of the Jackal set to premiere on Peacock on November 14. And while Fantastic Beasts may be over, the Wizarding World continues to thrive, keeping the legacy of magic and wonder alive for future generations.

Were you a fan of the Fantastic Beasts franchise? Are you sad to hear it’s been pulled from Warner Bros.?
