More than 20 years ago, the wizarding world of Harry Potter was brought to life on the big screen. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone premiered in 2001 and starred Daniel Radcliffe as the titular boy wizard, Emma Watson as Hermione Granger, and Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley. The Harry Potter book series was already a cultural phenomenon, and the film brought the game to an entirely new level. In the decades since the film’s premiere, Harry Potter’s story has only grown in popularity, with Wizarding Worlds opening at multiple Universal theme parks.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Warner Bros. — who produced the entire film series — was working on a deal to bring a brand-new Harry Potter series to HBO. Reports indicated that the new series would be based on the original seven books, and would dive deeper into the world than the movies.

Now, we can confirm that a Harry Potter series is official! And it’s going to be around for a LONG time! According to Deadline Hollywood, the new series will premiere in 2025/2026 and last for a decade! Per Deadline:

“This new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,” said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content about the project, which he also assured fans would be “a faithful adaptation.”

Early reports had each season of the series focusing on one book in the Harry Potter book series, which consists of seven novels, but Bloys said the project would run for “10 consecutive years,” which would seem to defy the 1 season, 1 book assertion. For those of you who say Fantastic Beasts could be leveraged to provide 10 seasons over 10 years, WBD brass said specifically during the announcement that FB will not be a part of the series.

Whatever the case, Bloys promised that, as the company embarks on its new Harry Potter adventure, “We do so with the full care and craft of this franchise.”

HBO Max celebrated the news by sharing a fun tweet that also gave us our first image of what is to come.

While many people may be excited to see Harry Potter come to the small screen, there’s no guarantee that any original actors from the series will return. The series will start at the beginning, so the actors playing Harry, Ron, Hermione, and their friends will be children. However, you never want to say never. Fans love to keep up with the stars of the original films, so it is possible that they could cast original actors in different roles. How cool would it be to see Tom Felton — the original Draco Malfoy — take on the role of Lucius Malfoy in the series?!

One thing that many Harry Potter fans have been wondering is what kind of role writer J.K Rowling will play in the new scripted series. Rowling created the Harry Potter universe, but has since come under fire for her public statements against transgender individuals. She has also been accused of being “fatphobic” since the only plus-size characters in her books tend to be villains (i.e. Uncle Vernon, Aunt Marge, Dudley, etc.).

According to reports, Rowling will be involved only so much as to make sure the series remains loyal to the books. She will not serve as a writer, but will serve as an executive producer.

Disney Fanatic will keep readers updated as we learn more about the series!
