Disney’s ‘Percy Jackson’ Braces for Cancellation as ‘Harry Potter’ Looms

Camp Half-Blood is approaching a make-or-break season.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians will return to Disney+ later in 2026, continuing Rick Riordan’s five-book fantasy story with an adaptation of The Titan’s Curse.

Disney ordered Season 3 before Season 2 premiered, allowing the cast and crew to move quickly into the next chapter. The company has also released a first look, confirming that Percy Jackson’s story will continue this year.

What happens after that remains unclear.

Disney Has Not Renewed Percy Jackson for Season 4

Disney has not announced a fourth season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. No cancellation has been confirmed either, but the absence of another renewal leaves the series with no guaranteed future beyond its upcoming episodes.

Walker Scobell is returning as Percy Jackson, with Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood. The third season will take the trio into material that was never adapted by the earlier movie franchise.

The original Percy Jackson and the Olympians story runs for five books. If Disney continues adapting one book per season, two more renewals would be required to reach The Battle of the Labyrinth and The Last Olympian.

Season 3 will therefore leave Disney with a clear decision: continue through the final two books or end the series before Riordan’s original story is complete.

The early third-season order initially appeared to give the show greater security. Disney announced the renewal in March 2025, months before Season 2 reached Disney+, avoiding another long period of uncertainty.

Season 4 has not received the same treatment.

That does not prove Disney intends to cancel the show. The company may wait for Season 3 viewing figures before making another commitment. However, the series will return during a difficult period for any young-adult fantasy release.

And it doesn't help that a competing franchise is about to take over the same holiday calendar.

HBO Sets Harry Potter for Christmas 2026

HBO’s Harry Potter television reboot will debut at Christmas 2026, placing its first season close to the return of Percy Jackson.

The eight-episode season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will restart J.K. Rowling’s story with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter. HBO has described the project as a faithful adaptation of the original books.

The two shows will stream on different platforms, but they are likely to reach many of the same families, fantasy readers and younger viewers.

That overlap has already prompted concern among Percy Jackson fans, particularly those who believe HBO could deliver a more detailed book adaptation than Disney.

One fan wrote: “Once Harry Potter comes out the PJO show could become irrelevant no matter when it’s released. If it gets everything right that PJO has got wrong then it’ll be a massive hit and will once again dwarf everything in sight.”

Harry Potter also arrives with a much larger existing profile. The Wizarding World has remained active through eight original films, theme parks, merchandise, video games and stage productions.

HBO’s new cast and the decision to retell the books for television have kept the reboot under close attention throughout production. Its Christmas release will make it one of the biggest streaming launches of the year.

For Percy Jackson, that timing could prove important. Season 3 must convince Disney that there is enough demand to fund two more chapters while competing for attention with the return of one of the world’s best-known fantasy franchises.

Disney has not indicated that Harry Potter will influence its decision, and there is currently no confirmation that Percy Jackson will be canceled.

Do you think Percy Jackson and the Olympians will run for all five seasons as planned?
