A day at Walt Disney World can involve plenty of unexpected challenges, but simply getting into a ride vehicle probably isn't one most guests think about before arriving.
For some adults, however, that's exactly what can make several beloved Magic Kingdom attractions surprisingly difficult. Low seats, cramped vehicles, unusual riding positions, and tricky boarding areas can effectively put certain rides “off-limits” for guests who don't find them comfortable.
Disney hasn't officially banned adults from any of these attractions. Grown-up guests remain welcome as long as they meet applicable safety requirements. Instead, these are rides that some adults may personally decide aren't worth the discomfort.
And surprisingly, some of Disney World's gentlest attractions can present the biggest challenges.
Peter Pan's Flight Isn't Spacious
Peter Pan's Flight continues to draw guests to Fantasyland, but its suspended pirate ships can feel cramped for some adults.
Taller or larger guests may find themselves short on space, particularly when sharing a vehicle with family members. The ships also hang from an overhead track, giving them a different type of movement than a typical ground-level dark ride.
That motion may bother particularly sensitive riders, even though Disney classifies Peter Pan's Flight as a slow attraction suitable for all ages.
Tomorrowland Speedway Keeps Riders Low
Children may see Tomorrowland Speedway as their opportunity to get behind the wheel finally. Adults accompanying them face a different challenge.
The attraction's gas-powered cars sit close to the ground. Guests have to lower themselves into the vehicle and then climb back out when the ride ends.
That process may prove awkward for adults with knee, hip, back, or mobility concerns.
Disney offers a transfer-access option for guests who require additional assistance, but its standard cars still have a low boarding position. The gasoline smell may also prove unpleasant for some visitors, particularly around the loading area.
Dumbo Can Be a Tight Squeeze
Dumbo the Flying Elephant has one of the most recognizable ride vehicles Disney has ever created.
Its design stretches back to Disneyland's opening year in 1955, and an original Dumbo vehicle now belongs to the Smithsonian's collection. Magic Kingdom even operates two Dumbo spinners.
Despite that family-friendly history, the elephants can feel tight for some grown-up riders.
Disney lists Dumbo as an attraction for all ages, and adults regularly ride alongside children. Still, taller guests and adults sharing an elephant with younger family members may find themselves wishing for more room.
Getting Into Disney's Boats Can Be the Hard Part
Pirates of the Caribbean, Jungle Cruise, and “it's a small world” are relatively gentle attractions, but boarding their standard boats can require more effort than some adults expect.
Guests generally step down into these vehicles before climbing upward again when exiting. A boat may also move slightly during loading, potentially making the process harder for adults with balance or mobility concerns.
Pirates of the Caribbean presents another possible complication because surfaces inside its boats can occasionally become wet.
Jungle Cruise does offer an important alternative. While guests using standard boats step down to board, Disney has an accessible boat that allows eligible visitors to remain in a wheelchair or ECV.
TRON Puts Riders in an Unusual Position
TRON Lightcycle / Run doesn't use conventional coaster seats for most passengers.
Instead, riders lean forward aboard motorcycle-style Lightcycles. While many guests have no problem with that position, some taller or larger adults may find it restrictive.
Disney offers more traditional upright-style seating on select trains for guests who cannot comfortably use the standard Lightcycles.
Because those seats are limited, guests requesting them may occasionally have to wait for the appropriate train.
Space Mountain Can Become Tougher With Age
Space Mountain's darkness and unpredictable movements have helped make it a Magic Kingdom favorite for decades.
Those same characteristics can make the coaster uncomfortable for certain adults.
Its rocket vehicles sit extremely low, forcing guests to lower themselves deep into their seats before climbing back out afterward. Adults with knee, hip, back, or mobility concerns may find that process particularly difficult.
Once underway, Space Mountain delivers quick turns, drops, and sudden changes in direction. Darkness prevents riders from easily anticipating what's coming.
Some guests love that unpredictability. Others may decide their backs have ridden Space Mountain enough times already.
Disney Could Make These Classics Easier to Ride
Disney World attracts families across multiple generations, from young children to parents and grandparents who want to experience attractions together.
None of these rides literally prohibits adults from boarding. Instead, their vehicles and loading procedures can make certain grown-up guests less comfortable.
Disney has already incorporated alternatives on attractions such as TRON and Jungle Cruise. Similar improvements to seating, transfers, and loading could make other experiences easier for more visitors.
After all, adults riding with their children shouldn't have to worry that getting aboard will be the hardest part of the attraction.
