Dollywood Announces Closure Through August 7, 2026

The Dollywood Express is down again — and while the Pigeon Forge theme park has given guests a target date for its return, the steam train's recurring maintenance struggles are becoming a familiar part of the Dolly Parton-themed vacation destination experience.

Dollywood posted an official notice to its Instagram story on Monday confirming that the Dollywood Express had closed for maintenance, with a scheduled return to service on Friday, August 7. The full statement read:

“PARK UPDATE

Guests with Monday through Thursday plans at the Pigeon Forge vacation destination will find the steam train unavailable without prior notice via the park's main communication channels.

A Ride With a Long and Complicated History

The Dollywood Express is one of the most historically significant attractions at the park, predating Dolly Parton's ownership entirely. The steam train traces its roots to the park's earliest incarnation as the Rebel Railroad, surviving multiple ownership changes and operating under different names before Parton took over in 1986 and the destination became Dollywood.

That longevity has come with a cost. Over recent years, the Dollywood Express has become one of the park's most maintenance-intensive attractions, closing repeatedly for weeks or months at a time. Earlier in 2026, Dollywood announced a significant upgrade — converting the steam train from coal to oil — designed to reduce air pollution and simplify ongoing maintenance.

The timing of the closure lands at a natural turning point in the park's annual calendar. Dollywood just wrapped up its Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration, with the Harvest Festival & Great Pumpkin LumiNights set to begin on September 14. Smoky Mountain Christmas follows on November 6 and runs through the end of the 2026 operating season on January 3, 2027.
