One of EPCOT’s biggest attractions is officially getting some construction work, and the company Disney has hired makes the new permit particularly interesting.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind has been operating since May 2022, quickly becoming one of Walt Disney World’s most popular thrill rides. Four years later, Disney has filed a construction permit tied directly to the attraction.
There’s currently no announced refurbishment or closure for Cosmic Rewind. However, depending on exactly what the project involves, some downtime could eventually be necessary.
Here’s what we know.
Disney Files Permit for Cosmic Rewind
Disney’s Facility Asset Management team filed the new permit for the address associated with Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.
The permit describes the project as “General Construction,” which doesn’t give away many details about what Disney intends to do.
However, Coastal Steel is listed as the contractor.
That makes the filing more interesting than a typical permit involving smaller maintenance projects. Coastal Steel has previously worked with roller coasters and themed elements, raising questions about where the company could be working around Cosmic Rewind.
At this point, the permit does not specify what steel components may require attention.
Could Cosmic Rewind Temporarily Close?
This is where things remain uncertain.
Because the project involves Coastal Steel, there is a possibility that the work could affect the attraction’s operations. If crews need to access portions of the coaster or another area that cannot safely be worked on while the attraction operates, Disney could need to temporarily close the ride.
However, that is only one possibility.
Disney could potentially complete the work overnight or in an area that does not interfere with guests or ride operations.
The fact that Disney’s Facility Asset Management team filed the permit may also provide some context. That department’s involvement suggests this could be general maintenance rather than a substantial alteration to the attraction.
There is currently nothing in the permit suggesting Disney plans to change the Cosmic Rewind experience itself.
Disney Has Not Announced a Closure
For guests with upcoming EPCOT trips, this is the most important detail.
Disney has not announced a closure for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.
There are currently no confirmed refurbishment dates connected to this permit, and guests shouldn’t assume the coaster is about to shut down simply because construction work has been filed.
Still, Cosmic Rewind is more than four years into its operating life. Maintenance is an unavoidable part of keeping an attraction of this size and complexity running.
A temporary closure at some point wouldn’t necessarily signal anything unusual.
For now, Cosmic Rewind remains available to EPCOT guests. But with a steel contractor officially attached to new construction work at the attraction, Disney’s refurbishment calendar will be worth watching.
