Disney is reaching deep into EPCOT's past ahead of D23, and the timing couldn't be much more interesting.
A former attraction that hasn't played at the park in nearly 11 years is getting fresh attention just weeks before a milestone anniversary. Disney hasn't announced plans to bring the experience back, but its sudden appearance in the D23 conversation gives longtime fans a reason to wonder whether nostalgia could eventually extend beyond merchandise.
For now, it's only a possibility. But Disney has brought this particular attraction back from retirement once before.
Disney World Keeps Moving Beyond Its Past
Disney World regularly replaces older experiences as its parks evolve. The past few years alone have brought permanent closures involving several longtime attractions.
- Splash Mountain (2023) – The Magic Kingdom attraction closed in January 2023 before Disney transformed it into Tiana's Bayou Adventure, which opened in June 2024.
- Muppet*Vision 3D (2025) – Disney closed the Disney's Hollywood Studios attraction in June 2025 as it prepared the surrounding area for Monstropolis, its new Monsters, Inc.-themed land.
- Tom Sawyer Island (2025) – The Magic Kingdom area closed permanently in July 2025 alongside the Rivers of America. Disney is using the area for Piston Peak National Park, a Cars-themed expansion.
- Liberty Square Riverboat (2025) – The Liberty Belle ended its Magic Kingdom run alongside Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America. Piston Peak will also transform its former surroundings.
Those experiences aren't coming back in their original forms anytime soon. However, Disney has occasionally resurrected pieces of its theme park history.
Captain EO already provides one example.
An Iconic EPCOT Experience
Long before today's EPCOT, Michael Jackson took center stage inside the Journey Into Imagination pavilion.
Captain EO debuted there on September 12, 1986. The 3D musical science-fiction film starred Jackson and featured an elaborate adventure filled with music, unusual characters, and special effects.
Francis Ford Coppola directed Captain EO, while George Lucas served as executive producer. Jackson performed music during the film, including “We Are Here to Change the World.”
Its first EPCOT run lasted until 1994.
Years later, Disney gave Captain EO an unexpected second life following Jackson's death in 2009. The film returned to EPCOT in July 2010 and continued playing there until December 2015.
Nearly 11 years have passed since then. Now, Disney is revisiting Captain EO once again.
Beloved Character Returning for D23
D23 takes place August 14 through August 16, and one of Disney's merchandise releases dates back directly to Captain EO.
Disney has created an interactive Fuzzball plush based on the small flying character from Captain EO (1986). The plush features authentic sounds and will first become available to guests at D23.
Fans who aren't attending won't be completely left out. Disney plans to make the merchandise available through the Disney Store online following the event.
New merchandise alone doesn't point to a theme park comeback. Disney frequently taps into nostalgia without resurrecting old attractions.
Captain EO, however, has another important date approaching.
The 40th Anniversary Creates an Interesting Possibility
September 12 will mark the 40th anniversary of Captain EO's EPCOT debut.
There's also renewed attention surrounding Jackson following the release of Michael (2026). His nephew, Jaafar Jackson, stars in the biographical film, which opened in theaters in April and recently arrived on Starz.
Could all of that lead to something at EPCOT?
There's no confirmation that it will.
Still, Disney has temporarily changed attractions to recognize major celebrations. Soarin' Across America debuted at EPCOT in May 2026 as part of Disney's celebration of America's 250th anniversary.
A limited engagement of Captain EO could theoretically follow a similar approach.
Disney hasn't announced anything of the sort. The new Fuzzball plush may simply recognize Captain EO's 40th anniversary without leading to anything inside the parks.
Disney Has Plenty to Discuss at D23
Captain EO also arrives as Disney moves forward with major theme park projects around the world.
At Walt Disney World, Monstropolis is under construction at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Magic Kingdom has Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land in development, while Disney's Animal Kingdom is undergoing its Tropical Americas transformation.
Disney Adventure World debuted at Disneyland Paris in March alongside World of Frozen. Work is also underway on a future Lion King area featuring a major water attraction.
Meanwhile, Tokyo Disneyland is preparing for its next-generation Space Mountain project.
Any of those developments could receive attention at D23. Disney could also reveal refurbishments, closures, replacements, or other projects, although the company hasn't promised any specific announcement.
All Eyes Are on Captain EO
For now, the Fuzzball plush is the news. Anything beyond that remains speculation.
But the circumstances make Captain EO difficult to ignore.
Disney is bringing back the former EPCOT experience to fans nearly 11 years after its departure, just weeks before EPCOT's 40th anniversary.
That could be nothing more than well-timed nostalgia. Or Disney could have another anniversary surprise waiting.
Until the company says otherwise, fans will have to wait and see.
