Josh D’Amaro Did Something No Disney CEO Has Done at D23

Disney's CEO spent opening day at D23: The Ultimate Fan Event walking the show floor, shaking hands with random attendees. No stage. No script. No announcement.

Some context.

Look, D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event is here, and this is the weekend Disney fans structure their entire year around. Same routine every time. Months of rumors, leaks, permit-watching, and prediction posts funnel into a handful of days when everything gets confirmed or quietly dies. People arrive with wish lists. Some leave vindicated. Others watch a pet theory get demolished on stage.

Nobody writes “bump into the CEO of The Walt Disney Company” on that list.

Happened anyway.

Where He Was at D23

Josh D'Amaro was spotted walking through the Anaheim Convention Center, stopping to shake hands and talk with attendees.

Photos on his official Instagram show him greeting guests outside the convention center and all over the show floor.

The caption on his post:

“We're excited to welcome fans from around the world to #D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event this weekend. There's nothing like seeing this community come together, and I'm thrilled to be celebrating what makes Disney so special with all of you.”

Why This Is Actually a Big Deal

Disney CEOs have historically kept a very different profile at this thing.

Bob Iger and Bob Chapek both stuck to formal, scheduled appearances. The big showcases covering Disney Parks, entertainment, and the headline presentations. Staged, structured, on the schedule.

An unannounced walk through the show floor on day one is a completely different move. It puts the CEO in the same room as regular ticket holders with no podium between them.

This is also D'Amaro's first D23 since officially replacing Bob Iger as CEO earlier this year.

To Be Fair, This Is Just Who He Is

If this surprises you, you have not been paying attention long.

D'Amaro used to run Disney Experiences, and in that job, he constantly turned up at fan events, theme parks, and major presentations, including the Disney Experiences Showcase at D23.

He has years of informal appearances and guest run-ins at Disney Parks around the world. Fans have been swapping stories about him since well before he got the big chair.

The title changed. The habits did not.

What His Run Has Looked Like

The floor walk fits a bigger pattern.

Analysts expected restructuring when he took over. New CEOs almost always show up with reorgs, shuffled reporting lines, and pivots designed to signal change.

Did not happen.

Internally, D'Amaro kept the managerial architecture his predecessor built largely intact, choosing operational stability over disruptive overhauls. His directives have focused on execution instead of reinvention.

Streaming got a continued push on core profitability and stabilizing average revenue per user across Disney+ and Hulu. Experiences kept the $60 billion capital expenditure plan locked, with construction accelerating on Villains Land at Magic Kingdom and Monstropolis at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

The logic holds up. The company had already churned through the late-stage Iger era, then Chapek's centralized reorg, then Iger's reactive restructuring. Divisions were fried and wanted predictability.

The Part Nobody Predicted at D23

Externally, it has been considerably less calm.

D'Amaro has been in a serious regulatory fight over ABC's broadcasting licenses, mobilizing Disney's legal team and publicly defending the network's editorial independence instead of quietly settling.

Not what anyone expected from an executive who built his career in theme park operations.

Which makes the show floor thing land harder. The guy shaking hands at a convention center is the version Disney fans have known for years. The one handling federal regulatory pressure is brand new. Both are apparently running at once.

Why Fans Lost It at D23

Small stuff hits hard at an event like this.

D23 attendees buy tickets, fly in from all over the world, and stand in brutal lines for panels and merch. Most of them will never share a room with Disney leadership.

A CEO walking the floor without an announcement means some of those people had a completely unplanned encounter with the person running the company. That buys goodwill; a stage appearance simply cannot.

It is also a sharp read of the room. D23 exists to celebrate the relationship between Disney and its fans. Standing inside it instead of above it makes that point better than any speech.

Still Coming

D'Amaro also opened the Disney Entertainment Showcase at the Honda Center, talking about Disney's connection with fans across generations.

D23 runs all weekend with the Disney Legends ceremony and more parks news ahead.

Another surprise lap around the floor before it wraps? Given his track record, it would not shock anybody.
