Robert Downey Jr.’s Marvel comeback just became much bigger than Doctor Doom.
Disney used D23 to confirm something that once seemed unlikely after the emotional conclusion of Tony Stark’s story: Downey is officially playing Iron Man again.
The news comes as Marvel prepares to send the actor in a completely different direction. Downey already has a major MCU future ahead of him as Doctor Doom, making it appear that his days as Tony Stark were firmly in the past.
But that assumption no longer holds.
Disney has confirmed Downey isn’t finished with Iron Man after all, although the circumstances surrounding his return are very different from what some fans might expect.
Tony Stark’s Story Seemed Finished
Before Marvel could bring Downey back, it had to contend with one of the most famous endings in the MCU.
Downey first appeared as Tony Stark in Iron Man (2008), the movie that helped launch the interconnected franchise. Over the years, Iron Man grew from a billionaire weapons manufacturer into a central member of the Avengers.
His story also became increasingly connected to Marvel’s other heroes.
Tony’s complicated relationship with Steve Rogers fueled major conflicts, while his bond with Peter Parker showed a more personal side of the character. By the time the Infinity Saga approached its conclusion, Tony had become essential to the larger MCU story.
That journey ended in Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Tony used the Infinity Stones to defeat Thanos and his army, sacrificing his own life in the process. The moment gave Downey’s Iron Man an emotional farewell and seemingly closed the door on his time as the character.
Marvel eventually found a surprising way to bring the actor back without immediately reversing that ending.
Doctor Doom Put Downey Back in the MCU
When Marvel announced Downey’s return, it wasn’t Tony Stark standing at the center of the news.
Downey will instead portray Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday (2026).
The casting immediately changed the conversation surrounding Downey’s Marvel future. After spending years as one of the MCU’s biggest heroes, he will now return as one of Marvel’s most recognizable villains.
It also appeared to establish a clear divide. Tony Stark’s story could remain finished, while Downey started a completely different chapter.
D23 has now complicated that idea.
Disney confirmed that Downey will also step back into the Iron Man role, and his return will involve two major projects arriving in 2028.
Robert Downey Jr. Is Playing Iron Man Again
Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab will both open at Disney California Adventure in 2028, and Downey will be part of the experience.
Avengers Infinity Defense will send recruits across the Multiverse for a confrontation with King Thanos, a version of the villain who won in his own reality.
The adventure will guide guests through different environments, combining large physical sets with screen-based scenes. Its ride technology will be similar to the 3D system used by Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure at Tokyo DisneySea.
Disney is also bringing back several familiar Marvel performers for the experience.
Iman Vellani will appear as Ms. Marvel during the pre-show. Jeremy Renner returns as Hawkeye, Anthony Mackie reprises Captain America, and Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor.
Then there’s Downey.
Disney has confirmed that he will appear as Iron Man, officially putting the actor back into the role years after Tony Stark’s MCU death.
And Avengers Infinity Defense isn’t his only return.
Tony Stark Will Have Another Major Role
Stark Flight Lab will naturally put Tony Stark at the center of another experience.
Guests will board “gyro-kinetic pods” that move along a track before robotic arms pick them up and maneuver them through the experience. Those robots will each have personalities inspired by DUM-E, Tony’s robotic assistant.
Downey will reprise Tony Stark for Stark Flight Lab alongside other returning MCU actors.
Anthony Mackie will once again appear as Captain America, while Brie Larson will return as Captain Marvel.
Together, the two additions make Downey’s Iron Man comeback considerably more substantial than a single appearance. Disney is bringing its version of Tony Stark into both experiences when they debut in 2028.
But his willingness to revisit Tony inevitably raises another question.
Could Downey Play Iron Man on the Big Screen Again?
For now, there is an important line between what Disney has confirmed and what remains possible.
Downey is officially returning as Iron Man, but Disney hasn’t announced that Tony Stark will appear in another MCU movie.
His upcoming theatrical role remains Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (2026). Nothing about these new appearances confirms Marvel plans to reverse Tony’s death or introduce another version of him into the MCU.
The Multiverse does, however, leave plenty of possibilities available.
Marvel could theoretically introduce another Tony Stark without changing what happened in Avengers: Endgame (2019). Whether the studio is interested in doing that remains unknown.
What D23 does establish is that Downey is willing to play Tony Stark again.
For years, fans could only debate whether they had seen the last of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Now, Disney has provided a definitive answer.
Downey’s Doctor Doom era may be beginning, but his time as Iron Man isn’t completely over.
