A Reddit thread went off this week about one EPCOT store. It turned into a referendum on the entire front of the park.
Some context.
Look, last week we wrote about Disney World hotels losing their whimsy. Room by room, resort by resort, the heavy theming is getting swapped for muted colors and clean lines. Nice enough. Also, basically a Marriott with a Mickey silhouette on the wall.
Fans have been screaming about the exact same thing at a theme park for years.
EPCOT is my favorite park. Putting that on the record before I start.
The spine, though? That is the corporate center of EPCOT, and I do not think anyone is arguing with me anymore.
The Store Everyone Is Mad About
Thread title, zero hedging. Mouse Gear to Creations Shop is one of the biggest downgrades in Walt Disney World history.
Mouse Gear was loud, industrial, covered in oversized gears and neon. It picked a look and went all in.
Creations Shop is white. Bright. Open. Smooth.
“Really sad how they took all the theming and charm just to make them look like airports,” wrote user RoliePolieOlie__.
Another one, shorter. “Creations Shop has all the charm of a Target.”
Now, credit where it is owed. That Mouse Gear carpet had to go. It smelled. Nostalgia does not fix a smell.
But there was absolutely a version of this renovation where Disney ditched the carpet and kept the personality. Not what happened.
Disney Springs Got Hit Too
World of Disney went through the same thing, and the thread connected them instantly.
“World of Disney was the highlight marquee store at Disney Springs. I don't even want to walk into it now because of how shockingly bland it looks,” wrote user Spongebob226. “Like, my local Disney store at the mall should not outshine this store.”
And here is the one that should actually scare Disney. A commenter said they walked in ready to drop money on a Loungefly, a Spirit Jersey, and ears.
Walked out with nothing.
That is not a feeling. That is a receipt that did not happen.
The Theory
The same idea came up over and over. Boring store, merchandise pops.
“Their genuine theory is if they make the store as dull as possible it'll make the actual merchandise pop and therefore sell more,” wrote user ChampionTimes99. “I would go into Mouse Gear all the time but now with Creations Shop I almost never visit.”
The reply underneath is the sharpest thing in the whole thread.
“When the stores were really themed and unique I would always make a point to go check them out as part of the park experience,” wrote user nicktorious_, “and end up leaving with some item I wouldn't otherwise have bought. Now I can just avoid the bland stores altogether.”
That is the flaw, right there. A themed store was a destination. You walked into the room and left with a bag. Kill the room, and there is no reason to walk in.
Others pointed out upkeep. “It's cheaper to clean and maintain sterile, generic spaces filled with tile floors and easily replaced mass produced fixtures,” wrote user Ok_Objective_9524. “I hate it.”
It Was Never Just the Store
The thread widened fast.
“Really the whole renovation in the middle of EPCOT there is a downgrade,” wrote user captainwizeazz. “The fact there is some boring planter in the middle and not even any moving water or fountain is terrible.”
The list of what vanished is long. The fountain. Electric Umbrella. Fountainview. The Communicore buildings. That fiber optic walkway that never worked properly is now being pulled out.
“Something fun, flashy, and colorful to something boring, monotone, and gray,” wrote user Infinite-Dinner1725.
And the one that stuck. “I want the company to embrace some maximalism,” wrote user Arctic_Dreams. “Embrace being a fun theme park with characters and whimsy. Not everything needs to be white, beige, and sterile.”
Here Is What Nobody Says
Future World was not decorated. It had a thesis.
It believed something specific about the future, and the buildings argued the case. The shapes were weird on purpose, because tomorrow was supposed to look weird.
Agree with it or not, you always knew what the park was saying.
The spine now says nothing at all. It is pleasant. Shady, green, easy to walk. Plenty of guests genuinely like it. One commenter wrote, “I like Creations. I think it is fresh and bright.”
Pleasant is not a point of view.
Same Playbook, Different Building
Hotels and EPCOT, identical instinct. Sand down the edges. Cut the maintenance. Build something that will not look dated in a decade.
The problem is that Disney's entire advantage was looking like nowhere else on earth. A themed room and a store shaped like a machine were never efficient.
That was the whole point.
Nobody is asking for the carpet back. They are asking for a park that commits to something.
