Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has gone offline again at Magic Kingdom, marking another operational disruption for Frontierland as the land undergoes significant construction-driven changes.

The attraction closed on January 6, 2025, for an extensive refurbishment that lasted nearly 17 months. It reopened on May 3, 2026, with several updates: replaced track sections, refreshed show scenes, revised ride effects and theming, and an updated Rainbow Caverns sequence. The refurbishment also lowered the minimum height requirement to 38 inches, expanding accessibility for younger riders.
On August 25, 2026, the attraction unexpectedly went down during afternoon operating hours, coinciding with that evening's Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Disney issued a notification through the My Disney Experience app addressing the closure.
As reported by Kenny the Pirate, the message stated: “On behalf of the entire team at Magic Kingdom, I'd like to apologize that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is currently unavailable. Our Cast Members are working diligently to get this attraction up and running again. We are sorry you are not able to experience this attraction at this time. I hope you will enjoy some of our other attractions during your experience in the park today.”

As of August 26, the ride remained listed as “temporarily unavailable” on the app, with no confirmed reopening timeline. Guests planning to visit Frontierland should verify attraction status through My Disney Experience prior to arrival.
This closure is occurring alongside a larger, long-term overhaul of Frontierland tied to the construction of Piston Peak National Park, a Cars-themed expansion replacing the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island footprint, both of which closed permanently in July 2025.
According to Disney, the new land departs from the design approach used for Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, instead placing Pixar's Cars characters within a Rocky Mountain-inspired national park setting featuring mountains, waterfalls, rivers, trails, and geyser fields.
Planned additions include a visitor lodge and Ranger HQ, along with two attractions: Ridge Run Rally, an off-road racing experience through mountainous terrain and a geyser field, and a second, more family-oriented attraction centered on Miss Fritter from 2017's Cars 3. Villains Land is also under construction in the broader Frontierland footprint.

Separately, Frontier Trading Company, a western-themed merchandise and pin-trading location, closed on August 24 after sustaining flood damage from several inches of water overnight on August 23. The location reopened to guests on August 26 following cleanup efforts.
Disney has not provided an updated timeline for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad's return to service.
