Months have passed since guests last boarded one of Universal Orlando Resort‘s most famous water rides, and the extended downtime has fueled plenty of questions about what crews are doing inside.
For an attraction that's been around since the opening days of Islands of Adventure, a refurbishment isn't unusual. But when the closure stretches for months, fans understandably start wondering whether they're looking at routine repairs or the beginning of a much larger transformation.
Those concerns grew as the work continued.
Now, a Universal Team Member involved with the project has shared details about what's happening behind the scenes, giving fans a clearer idea of what Universal appears to have planned for the longtime attraction.
Jurassic Park River Adventure Has Thrilled Guests Since 1999
Jurassic Park River Adventure opened with Islands of Adventure in 1999 and has remained one of the park's most recognizable rides.
The experience starts innocently enough. Guests board boats and travel through Jurassic Park, surrounded by large dinosaur figures and physical environments.
But the peaceful tour doesn't last.
Escaped dinosaurs send the boat into restricted areas, where the situation becomes increasingly dangerous. Eventually, riders find themselves staring at a massive Tyrannosaurus rex before plunging down an 85-foot drop.
That combination of thrills and physical storytelling has helped Jurassic Park River Adventure remain popular for decades.
The ride also depends heavily on animatronics and practical effects. When a dinosaur stops moving, or an effect doesn't operate correctly, guests can immediately notice the difference.
Those problems have appeared over the years as the attraction has aged, making its current refurbishment particularly important.
However, the length of the closure also created another concern.
California's Jurassic World Transformation Raised Questions
Some fans wondered if Universal might be preparing to retire the original Jurassic Park experience entirely.
They didn't have to look far to see why that could happen.
Universal Studios Hollywood closed its Jurassic Park water ride in 2018. When guests returned the following year, they found something different.
Jurassic World — The Ride opened in 2019 with updated scenes, effects, and animatronics inspired by the newer Jurassic World franchise.
That history gave Orlando fans a reason to watch the current refurbishment closely. Could Universal use an extended closure to make the same move at Islands of Adventure?
According to someone working on the attraction, the project appears to be focused on something else.
Major Repairs Are Happening Throughout the Ride
One of the main welders working on Jurassic Park River Adventure shared details about the refurbishment online, revealing that crews have plenty to address.
“I can confirm a lot is currently under repair/refurbishment with multiple sections for the track, animatronics, and a bunch of other miscellaneous fixes needed,” the welder said.
Those comments paint a picture of a substantial repair project rather than a complete replacement.
Crews are working on multiple portions of the attraction, including its ride system and animatronics. After more than 25 years of operation, addressing those components could help solve problems that have become increasingly noticeable.
Guests have sometimes encountered effects that weren't functioning or dinosaurs that failed to move properly.
Giving crews months to work inside the attraction could provide an opportunity to address those issues more thoroughly instead of relying on smaller repairs.
And that work apparently includes some familiar dinosaurs.

Original Animatronics Appear to Be Staying
The welder also shared what he has observed while working around the attraction's animatronics.
“Everything I deal with or see is usually very stripped down to its bare structure or components. But based on what it seems like to me, I think they are just using the same animatronics.”
That should be encouraging for fans concerned that Universal might remove the dinosaurs they've recognized for years.
Based on the Team Member's observations, crews appear to be working with the existing animatronics rather than completely replacing the attraction's familiar figures.
Repairing those dinosaurs could address mechanical problems that have caused some to move incorrectly or remain motionless.
It would also allow Universal to improve the attraction while keeping many of the physical elements that have defined Jurassic Park River Adventure since its early years.
Universal Is Still Updating Jurassic Park
While River Adventure appears set to retain its original identity, Universal isn't keeping every part of Jurassic Park untouched.
Thunder Falls Terrace permanently closed in July 2026, ending the longtime restaurant's run inside Islands of Adventure.
Universal plans to transform the location into a new upscale, full-service signature restaurant scheduled to open in 2027.
That means guests will still find changes around Jurassic Park even if its famous water attraction remains familiar.
For Jurassic Park River Adventure, though, the current project appears focused on repairing what has worn down rather than replacing what has worked for decades.
If crews can restore aging effects, improve the dinosaurs, and address problems with the ride system, the lengthy closure could ultimately leave Universal's original Jurassic Park water ride in much better shape for its next chapter.
