HBO is changing Hogwarts for its upcoming Harry Potter television series, and one of those changes corrects something the original movies never did.
The network and Warner Bros. have revealed redesigned crests for Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. Rather than simply reusing the familiar designs associated with the movies, the new adaptation is establishing a different visual identity for each house.
But Ravenclaw stands apart from the rest.
The new series is restoring an important detail from J.K. Rowling's books that the original eight movies changed.
Ravenclaw Is Getting Its Eagle Back
Despite what movie audiences may remember, Ravenclaw's mascot isn't supposed to be a raven.
It's an eagle.
Rowling established the eagle as Ravenclaw's animal in the books, but Warner Bros.' original movies used a raven for the house crest. That imagery became familiar through the films and associated merchandise, allowing the movie version to become the one many fans recognize.
HBO isn't continuing that decision.
The redesigned Ravenclaw emblem prominently features an eagle, bringing the house back in line with Rowling's original version.
It's a relatively small visual adjustment compared to recasting Harry, Ron, Hermione, and the rest of the Wizarding World. Still, it offers an interesting look at how HBO plans to distinguish its adaptation from what came before.

HBO Is Redesigning All Four Houses
Ravenclaw isn't the only house receiving a makeover.
The traditional crest-style designs associated with the movies are being replaced by round emblems featuring each house's name, mascot, and familiar colors.
Gryffindor remains represented by its lion, while Slytherin retains its serpent and Hufflepuff keeps its badger.
The new designs won't exist only in promotional material, either. They have already been shown on banners around HBO's version of Hogwarts, including around the Quidditch pitch.
That means viewers should become very familiar with them once the series arrives.
The New Harry Potter Will Look Different
Changing Ravenclaw's mascot back to an eagle may also signal something larger about HBO's approach.
The television series has an opportunity to revisit details that were changed, condensed, or completely removed when Rowling's seven novels became eight movies.
Rather than treating those films as a blueprint, HBO can return directly to the books.
That doesn't mean everything will change. Hogwarts still needs to feel like Hogwarts, and each house retains the identity fans recognize.
But HBO clearly isn't afraid to rethink familiar imagery.
For Ravenclaw fans, that means one particularly noticeable movie-era decision is disappearing.
After eight Harry Potter films featuring the altered Ravenclaw imagery, HBO is going back to Rowling's books.
The raven is out.
The eagle is finally back.
