Gina Carano's future in the Star Wars franchise has remained uncertain for years, but Lucasfilm may have finally provided its clearest answer yet.
Carano became one of the most recognizable faces of The Mandalorian when she debuted as former Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune in 2019. She returned for the show's second season, but Lucasfilm fired the actress in 2021 following a series of controversial social media posts.
Although Carano's departure immediately raised questions about what would happen to Cara Dune, Lucasfilm never recast the character. Instead, Dune was simply removed from The Mandalorian, with her absence eventually addressed during the show's third season in 2023.
Since then, she has remained absent from the wider Star Wars franchise.
That absence became even more notable after Carano's legal battle with Disney and Lucasfilm was settled in 2025. The studio's statement following the settlement appeared to leave the possibility of future work open, while Carano later revealed that she had reconnected with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. However, no return ever materialized.
Now, Lucasfilm has seemingly made its position clearer through a rather unexpected project.

Star Wars Leaves Cara Dune Behind
LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian revisits characters and storylines from all three seasons of the Disney+ series, bringing several familiar performers back to voice their roles. At the same time, it also recasts a number of characters, including Din Djarin, Greef Karga, Luke Skywalker, and the Client.
Cara Dune, however, is nowhere to be found.
That is particularly interesting because the special is specifically built around revisiting the earlier seasons of The Mandalorian, when Dune was still an important part of the story.
But rather than recasting the character, Lucasfilm has simply left her out. Watch the official trailer here:
Will Gina Carano Return?
Carano has not appeared in any new Star Wars project since leaving The Mandalorian. Cara Dune did not return for the theatrical film The Mandalorian & Grogu, and she has not been recast for a live-action appearance.
With the character now absent from a LEGO adaptation that revisits all three seasons of the series, Lucasfilm appears to have no interest in bringing Dune back.
For now, at least, it looks like Cara Dune's story has come to an end — and Gina Carano's time in a galaxy far, far away may be over for good.
