Disney World Saves ‘Vintage Disney’ Experience Fans Feared Was About to Disappear

Some of the best moments at Walt Disney World are the ones guests never planned.

That has certainly been the case at Disney’s Hollywood Studios this year. Since the Walt Disney Studios Lot courtyard opened in May, roaming Disney characters have turned an otherwise ordinary walk through the area into something much more unpredictable.

Guests have watched Rapunzel braid hair, practiced warrior poses with Mulan, and even played “duck, duck, Donald” with Donald Duck.

It has felt like “vintage Disney” in the best possible way.

But with The Magic of Disney Animation opening September 14, there was reason to believe those spontaneous encounters were about to disappear.

Disney has now put those concerns to rest.

Roaming Characters Aren’t Leaving Hollywood Studios

Disney confirmed that roaming characters will remain in the Walt Disney Studios Lot courtyard after The Magic of Disney Animation officially opens.

That's significant because several characters currently appearing outside are about to receive permanent meet-and-greet locations indoors.

Off the Page will feature six character locations. Guests can meet Rapunzel, Mulan, Chip ‘n' Dale, Donald and Daisy, Goofy, and Stitch, with each experience connected to a different animation department.

It would have been easy for Disney to simply move those characters indoors and retire the outdoor concept.

Instead, the courtyard will get a new rotation.

Disney hasn't revealed exactly which characters will replace the current lineup, adding another layer of mystery to the experience.

Why These Encounters Feel Different

Walt Disney World vacations require plenty of planning these days.

Guests can spend months thinking about dining reservations, park days, Lightning Lane selections, and which attractions they want to prioritize.

The roaming characters work because they're almost the opposite.

You aren't necessarily getting in a traditional queue or checking off a scheduled meet-and-greet. You could simply walk into the courtyard and discover a Disney character doing something completely unexpected.

That's the kind of interaction longtime fans often associate with an earlier era of Disney parks.

And now Disney is keeping it around.

The Magic Continues September 14

The Magic of Disney Animation will still change the area significantly when it opens September 14.

Off the Page joins Olaf Draws, the Drawn to Wonderland playground, and the Once Upon A Studio Theater as part of the expanded experience.

There could also be roaming characters inside The Magic of Disney Animation itself.

That creates an interesting combination for Hollywood Studios. Guests will have traditional character meet-and-greets available indoors while a separate rotation continues creating spontaneous encounters outside.

Disney hasn't announced who will roam the courtyard next.

But fans worried that September 14 would mark the end of this brief return to “vintage Disney” can relax.

The characters may change, but the experience isn't disappearing.
