HBO has answered many casting questions about its new Harry Potter series, but the story's biggest villain still does not have a confirmed face.
Fans already know who will play Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and several of Hogwarts’ most important professors. The cast has expanded quickly, and the new version of the Wizarding World is becoming easier to picture.
Still, Lord Voldemort remains one of the most important roles HBO has yet to reveal.
That uncertainty has opened the door to plenty of online speculation, and one of the names now drawing attention comes with a very familiar connection to the franchise.
Robert Pattinson, who played Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), is being discussed as a possible candidate for HBO’s adult Voldemort more than 20 years later.
The Rumor Has an Obvious Connection
Pattinson’s history with Harry Potter is what makes the idea stand out.
He entered the franchise as Cedric Diggory, one of the central characters in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). His role placed him directly in the middle of the Triwizard Tournament and gave him a memorable place in the original movie series.
A return now would be completely different.
Recent online reports, social media posts, and fan discussions have fueled speculation that Pattinson could be in consideration for the adult Lord Voldemort role. HBO has not confirmed that he has been cast, and there has been no official announcement that he has signed on.
For that reason, Pattinson should still be viewed as part of the rumor and speculation surrounding the role rather than a confirmed addition.
Even so, the idea has gained traction because his career looks very different now than it did during his first trip to the Wizarding World.
Pattinson has since taken on several major roles, including Bruce Wayne in The Batman (2022).
The possibility of him returning to Harry Potter as its main villain would create a very different kind of franchise comeback.
HBO Has Already Filled Most of the Familiar Roles
While Voldemort remains a mystery, many other major characters are already set.
Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter. Arabella Stanton has been cast as Hermione Granger, while Alastair Stout will portray Ron Weasley.
Several important adults at Hogwarts are also in place.
John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer will portray Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu has been cast as Severus Snape. Nick Frost will take on the role of Rubeus Hagrid.
Luke Thallon will play Quirinus Quirrell, while Paul Whitehouse will portray Argus Filch.
The wider cast includes Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy. Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby will play Petunia and Vernon Dursley.
With those names already confirmed, HBO has moved far beyond the early stages of casting.
One newer announcement also connects directly to Voldemort’s story.
Tom Riddle Is Already in Place
Billy Barratt has been cast as Tom Riddle for the section of the story based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
That gives HBO a confirmed actor for the younger version of the wizard who eventually becomes Lord Voldemort.
It does not, however, necessarily answer who will portray the fully transformed adult later in the series.
The original films used different performers to portray Voldemort at different ages, so that HBO could follow a similar approach.
That means the adult Voldemort casting remains open, at least publicly.
And Pattinson is not the only actor whose name has been connected to the role.
The List of Possible Names Keeps Growing
Ralph Fiennes, Cillian Murphy, Bill Skarsgård, and Paul Bettany have all appeared at different points in reports, rumors, fan casting, or broader online speculation tied to Voldemort.
Fiennes naturally carries the strongest direct connection because he played Voldemort throughout much of the original movie franchise.
Murphy has also appeared frequently in speculation, while Skarsgård and Bettany have surfaced in fan discussions and online reports.
Pattinson brings a different kind of connection.
Rather than returning as the character fans already know him for, he would potentially come back as the central villain of the entire story.
That would make his return one of the most unexpected casting decisions HBO could make.
One Major Reveal Is Still Missing
The new Harry Potter series already has many of its biggest characters in place, but Voldemort remains one of the most important unanswered questions.
Pattinson’s name adds another interesting possibility to that discussion.
More than two decades after playing Cedric Diggory, he could theoretically return to the franchise in a role that looks nothing like the one that introduced him to Wizarding World fans.
For now, though, that remains speculation.
Until HBO officially announces its adult Lord Voldemort, Pattinson and the other names connected to the role will remain part of the conversation rather than confirmed cast members.
