Disney’s Skyline Landmark Nearly Vanishes During Extensive Work

Drive past Disney's Hollywood Studios lately and there's a decent chance something catches your eye above the trees before you even reach the entrance. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, arguably the most recognizable structure at the park, is currently covered in scaffolding from the ground all the way up to its 199 foot peak. What began as a fairly routine looking refurbishment months ago has since grown large enough to be visible from Buena Vista Drive, and we drove out ourselves to capture just how much of the building is currently under wraps.

If you've got Hollywood Studios on your radar for an upcoming trip, or you're just curious why that tower suddenly looks so different from the highway, here's the full timeline of how things got to this point.

The paperwork behind this project goes back to March, when Walt Disney World filed a construction permit tied to the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Actual work began in early May, starting in the outdoor queue area beneath the Hollywood Tower Hotel facade. Not long after that, Disney took down the flags near the gift shop and covered several ornamental sections of the building in protective scrim, likely as a way to keep those details safe while the heavier construction ramped up.

Scaffolding didn't appear on the building's exterior until July, first showing up above the gift shop before gradually spreading toward the front of the structure and climbing the tower itself. Within the last couple of weeks, reports confirmed the scaffolding had made it all the way to the top of the building, and it has now stretched around to the rear as well, meaning the entire Hollywood Tower Hotel facade is currently enclosed.

Why This One Is Impossible to Miss From Outside the Park

This is where things get genuinely interesting for anyone not even planning to visit that day. Now that the scaffolding covers both the front and back of the structure, the tower has become clearly visible from well beyond the park's boundaries. Buena Vista Drive sits close enough to Hollywood Studios that the building has long served as a kind of landmark for passing drivers, and right now that same landmark is fully wrapped in construction materials.

We took our own photos while driving by, and the scaffolding is easy to spot rising above the tree line, a noticeable change from how the tower has looked for years. Guests staying at resorts nearby, people passing through on their way to Disney Springs, and drivers on the interstate have all reported catching sight of it from a distance.

The Paint Job Behind All the Scaffolding

From what's visible so far, most of the work appears focused on repainting the building's exterior. As the scaffolding progresses across new sections, a fresh coat of pink paint has been appearing underneath, standing out sharply against the older, sun bleached paint nearby. The process looks deliberate, with a base layer of pink going up first before additional layers get added to recreate the weathered, haunted appearance the building is known for as a tribute to The Twilight Zone.

It's a good reminder that keeping an attraction looking convincingly aged actually takes real, ongoing maintenance. Faking decades of wear and tear isn't a one time job, and it clearly requires just as much attention as maintaining a brand new looking building would.

Riders Won't Notice a Thing Inside

Despite how much has changed on the outside, the ride itself hasn't skipped a beat. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror remains fully operational, and Disney hasn't given any indication that the attraction will close because of this work. There's also no confirmed date yet for when the exterior refurbishment will wrap up, so this look could be sticking around for a while longer.

What Photographers and Passersby Should Expect

If Hollywood Studios is part of an upcoming trip, the ride itself should be running exactly as expected once you're inside. What won't match your memory, or the photos you've probably seen online, is the building's current appearance from outside. Anyone hoping to grab that classic moody shot of the Hollywood Tower Hotel might want to hold off until the scaffolding comes down. And if you're simply driving through the area for any reason, don't be surprised if the tower grabs your attention long before you're anywhere close to the actual park entrance.

For now, it's worth adjusting expectations if getting a clean exterior photo matters to you, though there's something oddly fascinating about watching a Disney landmark get this kind of public facelift in real time.

Have you noticed the scaffolding while driving by yourself? Share your own photos or sightings in the comments, we'd love to see how visible it's been from other parts of the resort.
