Disney has found a surprising way to bring a forgotten corner of one of its parks back into the action.
A location that had been inactive for years is welcoming guests again, but not for its original purpose. Disney has instead turned to one of Pixar's most recognizable franchises to give the space another reason to exist.
The move comes while refurbishment work affects other experiences around the park. That has created an opportunity for Disney to turn an underused location into something guests can actually visit.
For now, though, there is no guarantee the new setup will last. Disney hasn't announced whether this is simply a temporary answer during ongoing construction or a longer-term change.
An Old Area Has a Very Different Purpose
Guests can find the new experience at Disney Adventure World at Disneyland Paris, where Sheriff Woody from Toy Story is now meeting visitors.
Disney placed the character experience inside the former Barrel of Monkeys shop in Worlds of Pixar.
The location once operated as a retail space, but it hasn't functioned normally as a store in years. Disney also removed signage and other references identifying the location as a shop some time ago.
Now, guests have another reason to step inside.
Instead of shopping for merchandise, visitors can meet a character. Disneyland Paris says Woody “or one of his friends” may appear at the location, so guests shouldn't necessarily expect to find the sheriff during every visit.
The change gives the former store a new purpose while adding another Toy Story experience to Worlds of Pixar.
The Timing Isn't a Coincidence
The new setup arrives while another part of Worlds of Pixar is unavailable.
The normal Pixar meet-and-greet area is currently out of circulation due to refurbishment work involving Crush's Coaster. With that project affecting the usual character location, Disney is now using Barrel of Monkeys as another place for character interactions.
The former shop makes sense for that role. Disney rarely used the location as a store in recent years, and much of its previous retail identity had already disappeared.
However, Disney hasn't confirmed whether characters will remain there once the refurbishment ends.
The Pixar meet-and-greet could eventually return to its previous location. Disney could also continue using Barrel of Monkeys if the new arrangement sticks around.
Guests interested in meeting Woody or another character should check the Disneyland Paris app, where Disney lists available meet-and-greet times.
One Change Is Part of a Much Bigger Picture
Barrel of Monkeys isn't the only location affected by work happening around Disney Adventure World.
Disneyland Paris continues moving through a broader period of refurbishment and development. Existing attractions are receiving attention as the park introduces and reshapes experiences.
Crush's Coaster is directly involved in the current situation. Its refurbishment has affected more than just the attraction itself, as the usual Pixar character location is also unavailable.
That creates an interesting challenge for Disney. Character encounters remain part of the park experience even when construction changes how guests use certain areas.
An existing, rarely used space gives Disney another option without requiring an entirely new venue.
The result may be a relatively small operational adjustment, but it also shows how older locations can find new purposes while larger projects continue around them.
Guests Have Another Stop to Consider
For visitors, the biggest difference is that Worlds of Pixar now has another character destination to find.
Families hoping to see Woody should check the app before making plans around the experience. Disneyland Paris specifically says Woody or one of his friends can appear, meaning the character lineup may vary.
The change also shows why guests may want to pay attention to refurbishment work before visiting.
Construction involving one attraction can affect nearby experiences, including character encounters. A location guests remember from a previous trip may not operate the same way when they return.
In this case, an old retail space has become part of the solution.
This Forgotten Space May Have Found Its Future
Barrel of Monkeys spent years operating far from normal as a store, but Disney has now given guests a reason to return.
Whether that reason lasts remains unknown.
Disney hasn't announced a permanent future for the Woody meet-and-greet or confirmed what will happen once the current refurbishment work ends. That leaves several possibilities open for the former shop.
For now, guests can once again walk into a location that had largely faded from everyday park operations and find an experience waiting inside.
Disney may eventually move the characters elsewhere, or Barrel of Monkeys could become the permanent location.
Either way, a space that had lost much of its original purpose is suddenly relevant again.
