Disneyland Resort Closes Beloved 25-Year-Old Attraction Just Before the Holidays

Seasonal preparations are already affecting what visitors can experience at California's Disney theme parks, and one longtime family favorite is temporarily off-limits.

With Halloween celebrations officially over, crews are preparing the resort for its next major holiday season. However, that work has disrupted an attraction that has operated for 25 years.

Although Disney warned visitors about the upcoming closure, families arriving at the park may still be caught off guard by the blocked entrance.

The good news is that the shutdown won't last much longer, and the attraction will return with a festive experience just in time for Christmas celebrations.

Christmas Takes Over Disneyland Resort

The transition from Halloween to Christmas is moving quickly at Disneyland Resort, where seasonal decorations and entertainment are beginning to replace the spooky atmosphere.

Both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure are preparing for the official holiday celebration, which runs from November 13, 2026, through January 6, 2027.

During that time, families can enjoy Christmas decorations, seasonal food, special entertainment, and character appearances throughout the resort.

However, preparing two theme parks for the holidays involves more than decorating buildings and putting up Christmas trees.

Certain locations must undergo temporary transformations to accommodate seasonal experiences, which can leave some attractions unavailable during the preparation period.

That is exactly what has happened at Disney California Adventure, where an original attraction has closed ahead of the holiday rush.

Disney Blocks Access to 25-Year-Old Attraction

Redwood Creek Challenge Trail in Disney California Adventure's Grizzly Peak area is temporarily closed as preparations for Santa Claus begin.

The outdoor attraction is currently blocked off with ropes, preventing visitors from entering the wooded adventure area.

A sign near the entrance explains that the location is unavailable “due to bear activity.”

While that warning might sound concerning, it is simply a playful message that fits the attraction's wilderness setting.

The closure comes shortly after Redwood Creek Challenge Trail hosted Villains Grove during Oogie Boogie Bash.

That Halloween experience transformed the attraction into a nighttime walkthrough featuring Disney villains and atmospheric scenery.

Now, Disney is preparing to replace that spooky experience with something much more festive.

Redwood Creek Challenge Trail is scheduled to reopen Friday, November 13, coinciding with the beginning of Disneyland Resort's Christmas celebration.

When the attraction returns, families can meet Santa Claus at Ahwahnee Camp Circle, located near its entrance.

Until then, visitors will have to find other activities throughout Disney California Adventure.

An Attraction That's Been Around Since 2001

Redwood Creek Challenge Trail has welcomed families since Disney California Adventure first opened in February 2001.

That makes the attraction 25 years old, placing it among the park's original experiences.

Unlike roller coasters or traditional dark rides, Redwood Creek Challenge Trail focuses on outdoor exploration and interactive activities.

Families can explore climbing structures, cross rope bridges, enjoy slides, and discover different areas inspired by California's forests.

One of those locations is Kenai's Spirit Cave, where visitors can discover their animal spirits.

The attraction is particularly appealing to families with younger children who want a break from the park's larger rides.

Its shaded surroundings also provide a more relaxed setting where children can play while parents enjoy a change of pace.

Over the years, Disney has continued to use the location for various seasonal experiences, allowing the original attraction to serve multiple purposes.

More Experiences Coming to Disneyland

Redwood Creek Challenge Trail isn't the only location preparing to welcome Santa Claus this holiday season.

Disneyland Park will introduce a different meeting location for Santa, giving families another opportunity to see him during their visit.

This year, Santa will greet visitors at Mickey's Toontown Trolley Barn rather than his previous location.

The holiday character will also appear at Disneyland Resort's three official hotels from November 13 through December 24, subject to availability.

At Pixar Place Hotel, families can meet Santa in the main lobby.

Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa will host Santa inside its Great Hall, while Disneyland Hotel will welcome him in its main lobby.

These additional locations give families several ways to include a Santa meet-and-greet in their holiday plans.

Disneyland Attraction Will Return

For families visiting Disney California Adventure before November 13, Redwood Creek Challenge Trail's temporary closure means missing out on one of the park's original attractions.

However, the shutdown is part of Disney's preparations for the upcoming Christmas season rather than a permanent change.

After 25 years, the outdoor adventure area continues to play a role in the park's seasonal celebrations.

With its reopening approaching, visitors won't have to wait much longer for the attraction to welcome families again.
