A handful of Disneyland visitors recently received an unexpected opportunity to enjoy one of the resort's priciest Star Wars experiences without spending nearly $250.
The popular lightsaber-building experience inside Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge normally requires guests to make an expensive purchase. However, a frequent Disneyland visitor recently revealed that he and a few others had participated without paying the usual price.
It wasn't part of a newly announced promotion, and Disney isn't advertising this particular opportunity to the public.
Instead, the guests reportedly found themselves in an unusual situation that allowed them to experience something many Disneyland fans would love to try.
There's one important catch, though, and it explains why visitors shouldn't expect to receive the same treatment.
Why Savi's Workshop Normally Costs Nearly $250
Inside Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland Park, Savi's Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers offers something different from a traditional theme park attraction.
Rather than boarding a ride, guests enter an immersive workshop where Disney employees, called Gatherers, help them construct custom lightsabers.
Participants select lightsaber themes, choose individual components, and assemble their creations while Cast Members guide them through a ceremony.
Music, dramatic lighting, and storytelling bring the experience together before guests activate their finished lightsabers.
For longtime Star Wars fans, the ceremony can feel like stepping directly into their favorite fictional universe.
However, Disneyland currently charges $249.99 plus tax for the experience and completed lightsaber.
That's a significant additional expense, particularly for families who want multiple people to participate.
And while most guests must pay that price to build and keep their creations, one visitor recently discovered a different arrangement.
Experienced Savi’s Workshop for the first time. They were offering “complimentary” services – meaning you could build but were not obligated to buy while they train new “Gatherers”
Really enjoyed it the experience.

An Unexpected Experience During cast member Training
According to a frequent Disneyland visitor, he and a couple of other guests recently participated in Savi's Workshop without paying the normal price.
The reason wasn't a special discount or a promotional giveaway.
Disneyland was reportedly training new Gatherers, and Cast Members needed participants while practicing the lightsaber-building ceremony.
The visitor, an adult who wasn't traveling with children, joined the session and experienced the interactive elements normally associated with a paid reservation.
He followed the building process and enjoyed the atmosphere without spending nearly $250.
However, Disney didn't let him keep the completed lightsaber.
The complimentary opportunity allowed him to participate in the experience, but ownership of the finished creation wasn't included.
Although the guest expressed disappointment at leaving without his lightsaber, he still appreciated being able to enjoy something that normally carries a substantial price tag.
The unusual circumstances also matter because Disneyland offers another complimentary lightsaber experience that operates very differently.

Disneyland Has an Official Free Lightsaber-Building Activity
Guests don't necessarily need an unexpected employee-training invitation to participate in complimentary lightsaber building at Disneyland.
Disney currently offers the Youngling Saber Building Expo – A Loth-Cat Crew Experience at Savi's Workshop.
This limited-time activity welcomes children, families, and visitors who are kids at heart.
Disney schedules the offering daily between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., although participation depends on walk-up availability and capacity.
During the activity, guests explore the lightsaber-building process and become members of the Loth-Cat Crew.
Participation doesn't require paying the standard $249.99 price.
However, the complimentary activity doesn't include a lightsaber to take home. Guests who want to keep one must purchase it separately.
The distinction is important.
Disney officially advertises the Youngling Expo as a guest experience. The visitor who participated during employee training wasn't attending that activity or accompanying a child.
Instead, he joined a separate session while new Gatherers practiced conducting the ceremony.
Disney doesn't publicly advertise those training opportunities as regular experiences, and there's no established reservation system for them.

Should Disneyland Guests Ask About Free Sessions?
The visitor's story naturally raises questions about whether other guests could receive similar invitations.
Savi's Workshop operates at both Disneyland Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World.
Visitors could politely ask Cast Members whether training sessions are taking place, but there's no guarantee that complimentary participation will be available.
Disney also hasn't confirmed that comparable opportunities exist at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
Even if training happens during a visit, Cast Members might not need additional participants.
For guests interested in a more predictable complimentary option, the Youngling Expo offers an officially advertised alternative while the limited-time activity remains available.
Ultimately, nobody should plan a Disney vacation expecting a free Savi's Workshop training session.
But for visitors lucky enough to receive an invitation, experiencing the lightsaber-building ceremony without spending nearly $250 could become one of their most memorable Disney moments.
