One of the easiest places to grab a meal at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is temporarily unavailable in its usual form.
Disney has closed the food court and dining room at The Mara for several days of maintenance, creating a change that guests staying at the resort will need to work around.
The closure runs from September 21 through September 25.
While the restaurant's seating and food court areas are unavailable, guests haven't completely lost access to The Mara. Disney is continuing to offer mobile ordering through the My Disney Experience app.
That's an important workaround, but it doesn't mean everything is operating normally.
A Convenient Resort Option Is Temporarily Missing
The Mara is one of those Disney World restaurants that becomes particularly valuable because of where it is and how guests use it.
Animal Kingdom Lodge offers more elaborate dining experiences, but sometimes guests simply want something quick.
That's where The Mara comes in.
It normally operates from 6:30 a.m. until 11 p.m., giving guests an option early in the morning and late into the evening.
That can be extremely useful during a theme park vacation.
A family might stop there before leaving for the parks in the morning. After spending hours at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, or Disney’s Animal Kingdom, they might return to their hotel and use The Mara for an easy dinner.
Guests don't necessarily have to plan far in advance to use it.
For anyone visiting between September 21 and September 25, however, the normal experience has changed.
Maintenance Is Underway
Disney has identified maintenance as the reason for the temporary closure.
Guests may see or hear work taking place around The Mara during daytime hours while the project continues.
There is currently no indication that this is a permanent closure or that Disney intends to substantially change the restaurant.
Instead, Disney has announced a defined five-day period for the work.
That's good news for guests arriving after September 25, but it doesn't necessarily help families whose vacations fall directly inside the maintenance window.
Those guests will have to make some adjustments.
Food Is Still Available Through Mobile Order
Perhaps the biggest thing guests need to know is that The Mara isn't completely unavailable.
Disney is allowing guests to continue ordering food through My Disney Experience.
That means visitors don't necessarily need to abandon The Mara entirely simply because the dining room is closed.
Still, there's a difference between being able to order food and having a fully operating quick-service restaurant.
Normally, the convenience comes from having everything in one place. Guests can grab their meals and use the dining area before heading back to their rooms or continuing with their day.
During the maintenance period, they'll need to plan around the unavailable dining space.
For a single meal, that probably isn't a major issue.
For someone spending most or all of the five-day closure at Animal Kingdom Lodge, it could become more noticeable.
Why This Closure Is Worth Knowing About
Disney World vacations require enough planning already.
Guests think about theme park reservations, attraction wait times, Lightning Lane selections, transportation, dining and countless other details.
Hotel dining can sometimes be the easy part.
After a long day, there's something convenient about knowing you can return to your resort and quickly find food.
The Mara helps provide that convenience at Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Its menu combines American and African fare, while its name comes from the Mara River in Kenya and Tanzania.
The restaurant also gives guests a less formal alternative to some of the other dining experiences found around the resort.
That's why this maintenance closure may matter more to hotel guests than its five-day duration initially suggests.
The Mara Shouldn't Be Gone for Long
At least this isn't another permanent Disney World closure.
The food court and dining room are scheduled to reopen after the September 21-25 maintenance period, assuming Disney's plans remain on schedule.
Until then, guests should expect some maintenance activity and should not arrive at The Mara expecting the regular food court and seating setup.
Mobile ordering remains the biggest way Disney is reducing the disruption.
For guests arriving later, this maintenance project may be over before it ever affects their vacation.
But anyone staying at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge this week should know about the change before heading downstairs for breakfast or returning from a theme park looking for dinner.
