Magic Kingdom guests have gone months without stepping inside one of Tomorrowland’s longest-running attractions. Now, Disney has finally given them a better idea of how much longer that wait could last.
Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress has remained unavailable since July, with the rotating theater undergoing an unusually lengthy refurbishment. From the beginning, the extended closure suggested Disney had much more planned than ordinary maintenance.
Those plans are now coming into focus.
Disney has confirmed that the attraction will return in 2027, and its latest timeline narrows the reopening to late spring. While an exact date remains unknown, Disney’s calendar could offer some clues about when guests might finally hear that familiar theme song inside Tomorrowland again.
Disney Is Reworking a Tomorrowland Classic
This refurbishment goes well beyond refreshing an aging attraction.
Disney is giving Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress an extensive overhaul while preserving the basic concept that has defined the attraction for generations. The experience will continue following an American family as technology changes everyday life, but Disney is reimagining portions of the scenes and the decades guests visit along the way.
Perhaps the most notable addition involves Walt Disney himself.
A Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic figure will appear in a new introductory scene, strengthening the attraction’s connection to its creator. Walt helped develop Carousel of Progress for the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair before the attraction eventually made its way to Magic Kingdom.
Rather than replacing the attraction with a completely different concept, Disney is using this project to update the existing experience for another generation.
That process is taking considerable time.
Carousel of Progress closed on July 6, 2026. By the time guests step inside again, the attraction will have been unavailable for many months.
Thankfully, Disney has now provided its clearest reopening timeline yet.
Late Spring 2027 Is Now the Target
Disney says Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress will reopen in late spring 2027.
That still leaves some uncertainty, but it gives guests considerably more information than a general 2027 timeframe. Disney has not announced a specific reopening day, meaning vacationers should avoid making plans around an unofficial date for now.
Depending on when the attraction returns, the refurbishment could approach a full year.
The lengthy downtime makes sense considering the scale of the work. Disney isn’t simply preparing the same Carousel of Progress that guests experienced before July. The updated scenes, the changing decades, and the new Walt Disney introduction will make the reopened version noticeably different.
But what exactly does “late spring” mean on Disney’s calendar?
That is where things get interesting.
Could Disney Be Looking at May?
The final weeks of May could be a possible target.
Disney World introduced several new experiences and reopenings around the end of May 2026. Memorial Day weekend also serves as an unofficial transition into the busy summer travel period, when families begin arriving as schools dismiss for the season.
Disney could take a similar approach in 2027.
A late-May reopening would bring Carousel of Progress back just as Magic Kingdom enters its summer operations. Disney has also used this general part of the calendar for Cool Kid Summer and other seasonal offerings aimed at families.
Still, May isn’t the only possibility.
Disney could consider April part of its late-spring window. Reopening then would give Carousel of Progress some operating time before heavier summer crowds arrive.
March is another possibility, although it would represent the earlier end of the potential timeframe. The 2027 EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival begins March 10, marking the beginning of another major spring period around Walt Disney World.
Even so, April and May fit the idea of a late-spring reopening more naturally.
Until Disney gets more specific, all of these dates remain estimates rather than confirmed targets.
A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow Is Getting Closer
What guests will eventually find inside Carousel of Progress won’t simply be the attraction they remember from before the closure.
Disney is updating portions of the family’s journey, changing the decades represented throughout the experience and introducing a new Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney.
For now, guests waiting for its return have one important piece of information: late spring 2027.
April could be in play, while the final weeks of May would place the reopening near Disney World’s transition into its summer season. Disney hasn’t narrowed things further, so guests will have to wait for an exact date.
After months behind closed doors, however, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress finally has a clearer path toward its next great big beautiful tomorrow.
