One of Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s most recognizable animal residents is preparing for a major change.
Guests have watched Bakso the Sumatran tiger go from a young cub to a two-year-old tiger, but his time at Walt Disney World is almost over.
Disney has confirmed that Bakso will leave Animal Kingdom later this fall and move to another Association of Zoos & Aquariums-accredited zoo.
His exact moving date has not been announced, leaving guests with an unspecified amount of time to see him before he goes.
The good news is that Bakso remains at Maharajah Jungle Trek for now.
Bakso Became a Guest Favorite as a Cub
Bakso has spent his entire life at Walt Disney World.
He was born in September 2024 to his mother, Sohni, and father, Conrad. His arrival marked an important moment for Animal Kingdom because Disney had not welcomed a Sumatran tiger cub in seven years.
It did not take long for guests to become interested in the newest member of the Animal Kingdom family.
Bakso made his public debut in January 2025, several months after his birth. Interest was so high that Disney opened a separate queue for guests wanting to see the tiger cub.
Since then, Bakso has continued growing at Animal Kingdom while visitors have been able to follow his journey.
Those days are now winding down.
Bakso celebrated his second birthday in September, and adulthood brings changes for tigers. Young tigers naturally become more independent as they grow, eventually moving on and establishing their own territories.
For Bakso, that means leaving Walt Disney World.
There Is a Bigger Reason Behind His Departure
Bakso is not simply being transferred because Disney decided it was time for a change.
His move comes as part of a recommendation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan.
The program helps accredited zoos work together to support endangered animal populations in managed care. Bakso could potentially play an important role in those efforts as he gets older.
Disney says fewer than 600 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild. In the future, Bakso could father cubs and contribute to the long-term future of the critically endangered species.
That makes the move an exciting development even if Animal Kingdom regulars will miss seeing him.
Bakso is essentially moving into the next phase of his life.
One Last Chance to Visit Bakso at Disney World
There is still an opportunity to see Bakso before he leaves.
Disney says he will remain at Maharajah Jungle Trek for a limited time, although the company has not announced exactly when his final day will take place.
That uncertainty means guests visiting Animal Kingdom this fall may want to stop by sooner rather than later if Bakso is on their must-see list.
The tiger has become a familiar face at the park in a relatively short amount of time. Even his name has an interesting story, as “Bakso” was inspired by the Indonesian word for “meatball.”
Guests have now watched him go from a highly anticipated cub to an adult tiger preparing to leave the only home he has ever known.
His departure may be sad for Disney fans, but the reason behind it makes this much more than a simple goodbye.
Bakso could eventually help support the future of Sumatran tigers, turning the end of his Animal Kingdom story into the beginning of something much bigger.
