Walt Disney World guests got an unexpected reminder this weekend that park availability isn't always guaranteed.
After weeks of relatively manageable September crowds, Disney suddenly faced a much different situation. Annual Passholder reservations reached capacity at multiple parks, leaving some passholders unable to make reservations for their preferred destination.
At the same time, wait times exploded.
The combination created one of the busiest days Disney World has experienced in quite some time, and it also exposed a bigger issue that could become increasingly important as attendance climbs.
Disney World Parks Hit Rare Reservation Capacity
Saturday, September 26, brought crowds that looked much more like a major holiday period than a random September weekend.
Annual Passholder reservations reached capacity at both EPCOT and Magic Kingdom earlier in the day.
That was noteworthy because passholder reservations haven't routinely disappeared recently. While Disney still requires reservations for Annual Passholders in certain circumstances, capacity restrictions haven't been something most passholders encounter regularly.
This time, though, demand was clearly there.
The effects quickly appeared inside the parks.
At EPCOT, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind reached a 160-minute posted wait by 6 p.m. and eventually hit three hours later in the evening. Frozen Ever After reached 115 minutes, while Test Track climbed to 75 minutes.
Magic Kingdom wasn't much better.
TRON Lightcycle / Run reached 85 minutes, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train hit 65 minutes, and several other attractions hovered around 50 minutes or longer.
Cooler and drier weather likely contributed to the sudden rush. After months of Florida heat, better conditions gave local passholders an appealing opportunity to visit.
But the crowds also exposed another problem.
EPCOT Struggles When Crowds Surge
EPCOT has plenty of physical space.
World Showcase can absorb enormous crowds, particularly during the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival. Guests can spread throughout the pavilions, restaurants, shops and festival booths.
The attraction lineup is a different story.
EPCOT doesn't have enough major rides to easily absorb an unexpected attendance surge. Once Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Test Track, Frozen Ever After and Remy's Ratatouille Adventure become crowded, guests have fewer major alternatives.
Hollywood Studios faces a similar challenge. So does Animal Kingdom.
Magic Kingdom generally handles crowds better because it offers considerably more attractions, giving guests more places to spread out.
Disney is developing new attractions across the resort, but those projects take years.
For now, this weekend demonstrated how quickly the current parks can become overwhelmed.
September 26 may ultimately prove to be an unusually busy Saturday caused by good weather, Food & Wine Festival demand and local visitors.
Still, passholder reservations reaching capacity while one of EPCOT's biggest attractions approaches a three-hour wait is difficult to overlook.
Disney World has room for plenty of guests.
The bigger question is whether every park currently has enough attractions to keep all of them moving.
