Walt Disney World Annual Passholders have enjoyed considerably more flexibility in recent years, but anyone hoping one controversial requirement was on its way out just received a reality check.
Theme park reservations remain part of the Annual Pass program, even though Passholders don't necessarily deal with them during every visit anymore. Between good-to-go days and the ability to enter most parks after 2:00 p.m. without a reservation, the requirement can sometimes feel almost unnecessary.
September 26 showed why Disney may have little interest in getting rid of it.
Three Disney World Parks Hit Passholder Capacity
Annual Passholder reservations reached capacity at EPCOT and Disney's Hollywood Studios on September 26. Magic Kingdom later joined them, leaving Disney's Animal Kingdom as the only park with Passholder reservations still available.
Seeing three parks reach capacity has become relatively unusual.
Several factors may have contributed to the increased demand. Cooler weather arrived in Central Florida, while the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival gave Passholders another reason to head to the parks.
Disney's Hollywood Studios also has newer experiences attracting visitors.
Whatever combination pushed demand higher, the result demonstrated that Disney's reservation system can still come into play when enough Passholders arrive at once.
That's not great news for anyone hoping Disney would eliminate it.
Disney Has Little Reason to Remove the Requirement
Disney has not announced that theme park reservations will remain permanently, but there is currently no announced end date for the Passholder requirement.
And after what happened Saturday, it is difficult to imagine Disney rushing to eliminate a tool that can still help control Passholder attendance.
Most days may never reach reservation capacity. That doesn't necessarily matter. Disney can loosen restrictions through good-to-go days and the existing afternoon rules while keeping the reservation system available for busier dates.
Passholders can currently enter any of the four parks without a reservation after 2:00 p.m., except Magic Kingdom on Saturdays and Sundays. Magic Kingdom requires a reservation for Passholders on those days regardless of arrival time.
Good-to-go days eliminate the reservation requirement entirely.
Passholders can also park hop earlier than 2:00 p.m. They simply need to make a reservation for their first park and scan into that park before heading elsewhere.
Reservations Could Be Here for the Long Haul
There is another possibility Passholders should prepare for: Annual Pass prices increasing before reservation requirements disappear.
Disney has not announced a price increase connected to this latest sellout, so that remains speculation.
Still, Saturday demonstrated that demand can remain strong even with the reservation system in place.
For Passholders who have spent years waiting for Disney to finally abandon theme park reservations, that may be the biggest reality check of all.
The policy may not affect every visit like it once did, but Disney just received another reason to keep it around.
