Stitch fans finally have a reason to celebrate at Walt Disney World.
For months, one familiar piece of the resort had been missing. There was no clear indication of when it might return, and its absence became harder for guests to overlook, especially those who remembered seeing it on previous visits.
That wait has now ended.
A recognizable piece of Walt Disney World has returned to its longtime home, bringing back something guests had grown accustomed to seeing over the years.
And for Stitch fans, the comeback may leave them wishing Disney would bring back something much bigger.
A Familiar Face Has Finally Returned
Stitch is once again perched outside World of Disney at Disney Springs.
The large figure has returned above the “World of Disney” signage, where Stitch stretches out his arms and grins at guests below. Disney removed him earlier this summer, leaving the familiar spot noticeably empty.
Stitch didn't completely disappear during that time.
The figure eventually surfaced backstage near Walt Disney World's North Marina, where Disney is working on a new Magic Kingdom ferryboat.
Now, Stitch is back where guests remember him. He also appears noticeably cleaner, suggesting his time backstage may have included some attention before Disney returned him to World of Disney.
For longtime visitors, his return brings back a recognizable part of Disney Springs.
But this isn't the Stitch comeback some fans have been waiting years to see.
Another Return Would Be Much Bigger
Stitch once commanded his own attraction at Magic Kingdom.
Stitch's Great Escape opened in Tomorrowland in 2004 after replacing ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter. Instead of taking guests through scenes aboard a ride vehicle, the experience placed them inside a theater where Experiment 626 caused trouble around them.
Guests sat beneath shoulder restraints as darkness, sounds, and physical effects helped create the illusion that Stitch had escaped. A Stitch Audio-Animatronic played a major role in the experience.
Disney eventually moved Stitch's Great Escape to seasonal operation before closing the attraction. It never returned as a regular Magic Kingdom offering.
That left Stitch without a permanent ride of his own at Walt Disney World, even as the character continued appearing elsewhere around the resort.
And his popularity certainly didn't disappear with the attraction.
Stitch Isn't Going Anywhere
More than two decades after Lilo & Stitch (2002), Experiment 626 remains recognizable to younger and older Disney fans.
Disney gave the franchise another major push with the live-action Lilo & Stitch (2025), introducing Lilo and Stitch to another generation.
Meanwhile, Stitch merchandise remains easy to find around Walt Disney World. Shirts, plush toys, accessories,s and other products continue to feature the character.
Parents who watched Lilo & Stitch (2002) when they were younger can now share those characters with their children.
That raises an obvious question: Could Stitch eventually get another Walt Disney World attraction?
Disney hasn't announced one, so any possible comeback remains speculation. Still, there are several directions Disney could theoretically take if it ever decided to give Experiment 626 another permanent home.
His Next Adventure Could Look Very Different
Disney wouldn't necessarily need to recreate Stitch's Great Escape exactly as guests remember it.
The company could revisit the basic concept with modern technology. Guests could enter another facility where Stitch escapes, with updated Audio-Animatronics, projections, lighting, physical sets, and sound, creating the chaos around them.
Disney could also abandon the theater concept altogether.
A traditional dark ride could finally put both Lilo and Stitch at the center of an attraction. Something in the spirit of Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway could send guests on an adventure that goes increasingly wrong once Stitch gets involved.
That journey could feature Hawaii-inspired locations alongside characters such as Lilo, Nani, Jumba, and Pleakley. Physical sets, projections,s and Audio-Animatronics could also make it a family experience rather than another version of the old theater attraction.
A new ride could ultimately put the relationship between Lilo and Stitch at its center.
Again, Disney hasn't announced either concept. They're possibilities, not projects currently confirmed for Walt Disney World.
This Comeback May Not Be Enough for Fans
For now, Stitch fans at least have one familiar sight back.
Experiment 626 is once again watching over World of Disney after disappearing earlier this summer. His return restores a recognizable piece of Disney Springs and ends the uncertainty surrounding where the figure would ultimately end up.
But it also reminds fans how long Walt Disney World has gone without a permanent attraction centered on the character.
Stitch continues to appear on merchandise, fans continue to embrace him, and Lilo & Stitch has reached another generation.
Maybe the restored figure will be the only Stitch comeback Walt Disney World guests get.
Or perhaps one day, Disney will decide Experiment 626 deserves something much bigger.
