Guests arriving at Disney’s Contemporary Resort could find part of their vacation plans disrupted before they even make it to the parks.
Disney has blocked off a popular area at the iconic hotel, with work now happening behind temporary barriers. There wasn’t a major public announcement ahead of the closure, either.
For guests with upcoming stays, there’s another problem: Disney World hasn’t stated how long the area will remain unavailable.
Guests Are Finding Barriers Instead
The splash pad at Disney’s Contemporary Resort is currently closed for what appears to be an unannounced refurbishment.
Temporary barriers surround the children’s play area while crews work throughout the space. Plastic covers portions of the flooring and several pillars, while several features appear to be receiving paint or other cosmetic treatments.
One of the biggest changes involves the splash pad’s central structure. It normally has a light blue appearance with gold spots and a gold bucket positioned at the top.
Right now, portions of that feature appear patchy, suggesting crews are treating or preparing the surface.
Nearby water shooters appear to be getting similar attention. Several shorter pillars at one end of the splash pad also have the same patchy look.
Based on what guests can currently see, much of the visible work appears cosmetic. However, Disney hasn’t publicly explained the full scope of the project.

One Important Detail Is Still Missing
The refurbishment itself may not be the biggest concern for families.
Disney did not publicly announce the splash pad project before the area closed, and there is currently no clear reopening date.
That leaves guests with upcoming reservations wondering whether the amenity will be available during their vacations.
A splash pad obviously isn’t as significant as losing access to a major Magic Kingdom attraction. However, resort amenities can be an important part of a Disney World trip, particularly for parents traveling with younger children.
Many families intentionally schedule time away from the theme parks. Those breaks give children an opportunity to play and cool off while everyone gets some time away from the crowds.
Losing an option could force families to rethink how they spend those afternoons or resort days.

Why This Closure Could Matter More Than It Seems
Disney’s Contemporary Resort offers families something particularly valuable: location.
Guests can walk between the Contemporary and Magic Kingdom rather than depending entirely on Disney transportation. The Walt Disney World Monorail also passes directly through the hotel’s recognizable A-frame Main Tower.
That proximity can make midday breaks much easier.
Instead of remaining inside Magic Kingdom from morning until night, families can return to the Contemporary, relax for a few hours, and head back to the park later.
That’s also when resort amenities can become especially useful.
The Contemporary offers pools, dining locations, shopping, transportation connections, and views of Magic Kingdom and Bay Lake.
Closing one children’s area doesn’t take away those advantages. Still, it removes another option for families paying to stay at the resort.
And guests may notice much more happening around the hotel than this latest closure.

This Isn’t the Only Work Guests Will Notice
Disney’s Contemporary Resort is already undergoing an extensive refurbishment, which is expected to continue into late 2027.
The multi-year project began in September 2024 and has progressed through several phases, with its projected completion timeline extending farther into the future.
Work has affected several major areas of the property, including the Main Tower, exterior panels, balconies, atrium areas, and Bay Lake Tower.
Depending on when guests visit, they may encounter scaffolding, construction coverings, restricted spaces, and crews working during daytime hours. Portions of the fourth-floor observation deck have also been affected.
Disney continues to operate the resort while completing larger projects in phases, so conditions can look different depending on when someone visits.
The splash pad closure is happening while that much larger transformation continues, although Disney hasn’t publicly confirmed that the two projects are directly connected.

Now Guests Have to Wait
Disney’s Contemporary Resort remains open throughout the larger refurbishment, but the latest closure adds another unavailable area for guests to consider.
The visible work at the splash pad could ultimately prove relatively minor if crews complete it quickly.
For now, however, Disney hasn’t provided that assurance.
Temporary barriers remain around the children’s play area, and there is no announced reopening date.
That uncertainty could be particularly disappointing for families with younger children who expected to spend part of their vacation enjoying the resort rather than spending all day in the theme parks.
Until Disney provides more information or removes the barriers, upcoming Contemporary Resort guests should prepare for the possibility that the splash pad won’t be part of their stay.
