Universal Orlando Resort is throwing a Wicked event at Universal CityWalk on October 24.
Glinda. Elphaba. Actual film costumes and props. A yellow brick dance floor. Free to get in.
For exactly one day.
Some context.
It is called the Wicked Oztacular Spectacular, and here is everything on the list:
- Stained glass photo opportunities
- Meet-and-greets with Glinda and Elphaba
- Costume and prop displays from the film
- A DJ playing hits from both movies, plus that dance floor
- Wicked trivia with prizes
The Universal Legacy Store will have the newest Wicked merch.
A few of these have shown up at Universal Orlando Resort before. This is the first time somebody has put them all in one spot.
Okay, So Why One Day
Because Universal is taking a measurement.
Think about what they get out of a single afternoon. Attendance numbers. Merch sales. Social media volume. How long the meet-and-greet lines run. All of it, cheap, in one day.
And the venue is the giveaway. CityWalk does not require a ticket. If Universal had put this inside Universal Studios Florida, every single person there would already be a ticket holder, which tells you nothing about whether people care about Wicked specifically. At CityWalk, you have to actually decide to show up.
They also picked a Saturday. You pick a Saturday when you want the biggest number possible.
And About That Missing Land
Universal Pictures made both Wicked films. Both were massive.
Since then, Universal has opened an entire new Orlando park, added lands, and announced years of upcoming projects. Zero Wicked land.
Now both movies are out, so there is no trailer, no premiere, nothing naturally keeping Oz in the conversation. Which is precisely when a company sitting on long-term plans has to keep an IP warm and quietly check if anybody still cares.
To be clear, Universal has announced no Wicked land and said nothing about future plans. That read is ours.
CityWalk Is Basically a Laboratory Now
This is a pattern, not a one-off.
Universal just brought The Traitors to Universal CityWalk, taking over the bar at Universal's Great Movie Escape with the Traitors: New Blood bar. Another owned IP, another cheap activation, another free space.
Meanwhile CityWalk keeps filling up. Fat One's Hot Dogs and Italian Ice opened recently. Five Guys is coming to the upper level. Category 10, Luke Combs' restaurant, lands next year.
So CityWalk is pulling double duty. Signing real tenants, and test-driving IP experiences without burning park real estate on them.
Works there, it grows. Flops there, it disappears and nobody mentions it again.
Now the Bad News
Two character meet-and-greets. One Saturday. Free admission. No reservation system mentioned anywhere.
Those lines are going to be genuinely painful.
And it gets worse. Halloween Horror Nights is running select nights through November 1, which means a late October Saturday has CityWalk already stuffed with HHN crowds pouring in and out all evening.
This event is landing on one of the busiest nights CityWalk sees all year.
Want Glinda and Elphaba? Get there early. That is the entire strategy. There is no plan B and no second day.
Still Unannounced
No Wicked land anywhere at Universal.
No word on whether this comes back, runs longer, or expands. No attendance expectations. Nothing past October 24.
Should You Go
If you are local or in town anyway, absolutely. Real film costumes and props usually mean a studio tour or a museum ticket, and this is free at a shopping district.
Early for characters. Merch will move fast, because a limited run at a one-day event is exactly how sellouts happen.
Then keep an eye on what Universal does after.
